  • Decomposing mental health inequities

  • Does more education improve mental health for ethnic minorities in the UK? The impact of Rosla 1972

Open Access•Facundo Herrera, Giuseppe Migali et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2026

Can educational expansion improve mental health amongst ethnic minorities? Despite extensive research on education-health relationships, causal evidence for mental health outcomes within ethnic minority communities remains scarce. We examine the 1972 Raising of School Leaving Age (ROSLA) policy, which extended mandatory schooling by one year for individuals born on or after September 1, 1957. This natural experiment provides exogenous variation i…

  • Measuring teachers’ readiness to use ICT before the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy

  • Widespread swabs testing and the fight against the Covid-19 outbreak

Open Access•Massimiliano Ferraresi, Giuseppe Migali et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2021

To control the reproduction rate, R, and therefore to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, countries have announced several measures. We rely on a quasi-natural experimental approach and provide graphical evidence of the effectiveness of the widespread use of swabs testing in reducing the Covid infection rate among Italian provinces

  • Spatial variations and clustering in the rates of youth unemployment and Neet

Open Access•Steven W Bradley, Steve Bradley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2020

We investigate the “determinants” of spatial variations in youth unemployment and NEET rates, and the presence of spatial clusters, for Italy, Spain and the UK. We aggregate Labour Force Survey data for the period 1993–2018 to a “regional” level. We find that youths are sensitive to aggregate labor market conditions and a discouraged worker effect. In the UK and Spain, temporary jobs are more likely to be preferred to part‐time jobs, whereas in I…

  • Spillover effects in local public spending

Massimiliano Ferraresi, Giuseppe Migali et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 2

This paper investigated the fiscal interactions between Italian municipalities over the period 2001–11 and found a positive horizontal interdependence in spending decisions. The results are robust to different specifications of the spatial neighbours and are confirmed by a natural experiment (an earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy in 2009) that creates an exogenous variation in the neighbours’ spending. Furthermore, there is no evidence of …

  • Personality traits, forgone health care and high school dropout

  • Did the Single Market Cause Competition in Excise Taxes? Evidence from EU Countries

    Open Access•Ben Lockwood, Giuseppe Migali•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Tax competition theory predicts that the introduction of the EU Single Market in 1993 should have caused excise tax competition and thus increased strategic interaction in the setting of excise taxes among EU countries. We test this prediction using a panel data set of 12 EU countries over the period 1987-2004. We find that for excise duties on still and sparkling wine, beer and ethyl alcohol, strategic interaction significantly increased after 1…
