  • Characterization of Obesity in the Prader-Labhart- Willi Syndrome

    Open Access•F John Meaney, Merlin G Butler•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•1989•Cited by: 2•References: 12

A multidisciplinary study involving cytogenetic, clinical, and anthropometric assessments of Prader-Labhart-Willi Syndrome (PLWS) has focused on improving diagnosis and prognosis in this complex condition. Since one of the major features of PLWS is obesity, 7 of the 26 measurements in the anthropometric evaluation were skinfold thicknesses at different body sites. Forty individuals with PLWS have been assessed. Z-scores were computed for skinfold…

  • Craniofacial variation and growth in the Prader‐Labhart‐Willi syndrome

    Open Access•F John Meaney, Merlin G Butler•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1987•Cited by: 3•References: 6

A study of anthropometric variation and craniofacial growth in individuals with the Prader‐Labhart‐Willi syndrome (PLWS) illustrates the utility of anthropometry in clinical evaluation and research. Anthropometric measurements, including head length and breadth, minimum frontal diameter, and head circumference, were obtained on 38 PLWS individuals (21 with chromosome 15 deletions) with an age range from 2 weeks to 39 years. No anthropometric diff…

  • Metacarpophalangeal pattern profile analysis in clinical genetics

    Open Access•Merlin G Butler, F John Meaney et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 26

The hand is a complex anatomical structure with the component bones susceptible to a combination of environmental and genetic factors that may affect the bone length and width. The alterations may involve a single bone or specific group of bones. The metacarpophalangeal pattern profile (MCPP) developed by Poznanski, Garn, and others (Poznanski et al. Birth Defects VIII (5): 125–131, 1972) is a graphic representation of the relative lengthening an…

  • An anthropometric assessment of Huntington's disease patients and families

    Open Access•Lindsay A Farrer, F John Meaney•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1985•References: 24

An anthropometric investigation was designed to evaluate patterns of physical deterioration in Huntington's disease (HD). In this study a comprehensive set of measurements was taken including height, weight, body circumferences, skinfold thickness, and craniofacial, linear, and breadth components of the body, on 44 normal, 26 affected, and 70 at‐risk individuals between 14 and 88 years of age. The anthropometric data were converted to z‐scores us…

  • Anthropometry and numerical taxonomy in clinical genetics

    Open Access•Richard E Ward, F John Meaney•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Cited by: 4•References: 18

Biological anthropologists can contribute a unique perspective as well as technical expertise to the diagnosis and classification of genetic disorders. Anthropometry has been used with increasing frequency to characterize syndromes and to establish ranges of variation within syndromes. The specific anthropometric‐radiologic technique of metacarpophalangeal pattern profile analysis has proven useful in discriminating individuals with the Prader‐La…
