A Love Letter to Our Past and Future
Ars Moriendi
As a short story "Ars Moriendi," the art of dying, pays tribute to how social science and its methods such as autoethnography can enhance our understanding of life and death. Contrasting the limited medical technologies of the past with the abilities of the present, this story once told to me by my father, an oncologist/hematologist, captures the human element in the act of dying. Often, our culture works diligently to treat death as an obstacle …
In His Own Time
In his own time: An autoethnographic memorial" pays tribute to how my life partner, "Jake," toiled to rehabilitate his life after great loss and struggle, while rebuilding an old family house. As Jake cleaned the debris and tuck-pointed and laid brick, he also brought back to life a family heritage of honor and justice-"of doing right no matter the consequences." Writing from what Ellen Fine (1988) calls "absent memory," memory that is observed a…
Gigi's Tipis
As an autoethnography, Gigi's Tipis experiments with the short-story format as a "new style" of qualitative investigation into family communication. Gigis Tipis presents narrative of family conventions and resistance as experienced by the author and her new family. When Jake's girlfriend, Gigi, makes an offhanded joke that upsets his sister, a series of scenes unravel the family's deep-seated tensions. Eventually miscommunication leads to no comm…
The Hermit and the Old Goat
Narrated by a man looking back at his childhood, The Hermit and the Old Goat is loosely connected to real events. Placing herself in this fictional character's mind allowed the author to explore with distant compassion the results of a traumatic family split. In self-narrative, we can re-script a traumatic experience's meaning without having to depict it exactly as it happened. The trauma of losing one's family disrupts one's sense of self, one's…
Traumatic Truths and the Gift of Telling
This article explores how three modalities of writing dissertation, memoir, and autoethnography negotiate the tensions between poststructuralist and psychoanalytic notions of truth as experienced by survivors of trauma. Although the nebulous nature of truth contrasts with the healing powers of speaking one's truth, this article argues that autoethnography in its experimentally analytic potential to produce meaning in and out of original contexts …
The Wedding Dress
The Wedding Dress presents an epiphanous shift in a couple's understanding of exogamy and commitment when confronted with extended family's clannish expectations. Submitting to and then challenging and destroying this power's hold is symbolized in the wedding dress. As an autoethnography, this story resonates with Sophocles's Antigone, in which choices must be made that challenge the law of the father (King Kreon, Jane-family) and demand the law …
Speaking Silence
Long-term, in-depth interviews with 11 abused lesbians and 10 domestic violence advocates reveal how lesbian victims struggle to define the relationship's abuse, their lesbian identity, and their own understanding of gendered violence in the context of cultural and institutional stigmatization of lesbians. By understanding abused lesbians’ silence as constitutive of their definitional dialogues about their relationships and the abuse, researchers…
