Adaptation of a General Optimism Scale for Use with Older Women
The Life Orientation Test has been widely used with various populations since its development, but its psychometric properties among older adults have not been assessed. This study employed exploratory factor analysis to examine the factor structure of a modified version of the test for 90 frail older women. The results do not support a unidimensional conceptualization of optimism. Internal consistency reliability was lower for the entire scale t…

Improving Effectiveness of Interviewing
117 medical students' performance on Carkhuff's Discrimination Index improved significantly after skills training. Students who participated in a cognitive awareness program showed no improvement on the same measure. Communication skills for medical students can apparently be improved by using this skills-training model but not through the cognitive awareness program
Gender Differences in Achievement and Affiliation Attributions
This study examines attributions (ability, effort, task, and luck) for success and failure in both achievement and affiliation domains across cultures as a means of evaluating whether gender differences are associated with cultural variations. Participants included 684 university students (314 males; 370 females)from India, Japan, South Africa, the United States, and Yugoslavia currently enrolled in teacher training, physicial science, and social…
Medical Students' Interest in Social and Cultural Aspects of Medicine
A survey of 73 medical students' interests in four major units of micro and macro socio-medical analysis indicated most interest at the level of family, followed by individual status, but less in societal and community influences. Implications for medical education and practice are discussed
A Cross-Sectional Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis of Mathematics Achievement and Attitudes
Results of the differences between cross-lagged panel correlations and of the consistency of them for 2,429 students within the first eight grades weakly suggested that attitudes toward mathematics is causally predominant over mathematics achievement for what variance is shared in common. The correlations, which were generally positive and low, were strongest within the fourth through the seventh grades
Dogmatic Thinking and Communication Skills of Student-Physicians
Medical students' performance on Carkhuff's Communication and Discrimination Indexes improved significantly as a result of a 9-wk. training program. However, students who performed better on these measures in relation to their peers were not more open-minded as measured by Rokeach's Dogmatism Scale
Multiattributional Causality
This study elaborated upon the internal-external locus of control dimension in cross-national achievement research by including a measure of a stable-unstable dimension, four individual causal attributions (ability, effort, context, and luck), and success and failure conditions. Subjects were 684 university students from India, Japan, South Africa, the United States, and Yugoslavia, majoring in education, social science, and physical science. Res…
Sex Differences in Self-Reported Achievement Motivation
Significant over-all sex differences were not obtained for scores of 134 women and 127 men (majority aged 18 to 20 yr.), on Hermans' Prestatie Motivatie Test. A stepwise multiple regression indicated that there were significant sex differences on 3 of the 9 aspects of n Ach measured by the test, Achievement Behavior, Persistence, and Time Perspective, based upon 5 items of 29 Chi square analyses produced significant sex differences on 5 of the 9 …
