Dancing Vowels
This article centers on Osip Mandelstam’s reading of his 1922 lyric «Я по лесенке приставной», which I consider in light of declamation studies of the time and the subsequent observations on vowels made by linguists who discounted those studies. I first provide a sketch of the work of Sergei Bernshtein and Sofia Vysheslavtseva, two declamation theorists who were personally acquainted with Mandelstam and whose work both informed and was, in turn, …

Osip Mandelstam and the Modernist Creation of Tradition
If modernism marked, as some critics claim, an apocalypse of cultural community, then Osip Mandelstam (1891-1938) must rank among its most representative figures. Born to Central European Jews in Warsaw on the cusp of the modern age, he could claim neither Russian nor European traditions as his birthright. Describing the poetic movement he helped to found, Acmeism, as a yearning for culture, he defined the impulse that charges his own poetry and …

An engaging collection of travel accounts by Russian writers-among them Maxim Gorky and Grigorij Machtet- who visited America around the turn of the century. The documents, most of which appear in English for the first time, are interwoven with explanatory comments by editors Olga Peters Hasty and Susanne Fusso. Together the pieces offer fresh insights into both the American experience and the Russian mind

Poema vs. Cycle in Cvetaeva's Definition of Lyric Verse
Tsvetaeva's Onomastic Verse
In her artistic philosophy Marina Tsvetaeva insists on the precedence of the word over what it stands for. "Slovo ved' bol'she veshch', chem veshch': ono samo veshch', kotoraia tol'ko znak." The signifier comes first and the signified trails after it, for the acoustic properties of the word expand its capability beyond mere denotation to poetic creation. The proper name too, far from being a mere representation in Tsvetaeva's view, draws its bear…
