  • Neoliberal feeling rules and political subjectivities in post-Soviet Latvia

    Iveta Ķešāne, Liene Ozolina•ARTICLE•Emotions and Society•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This study integrates the literature on neoliberal subjectivities with the sociology of emotions, and particularly the notion of feeling rules, to understand the political subjectivity expressions in Latvia where the post-Soviet neoliberal development brought high income and wealth inequality. We specifically ask what the relationship between collective emotions and neoliberal political subjectivity in post-Soviet space is. Based on our empirical…

  • The art of nationalism

    Open Access•Liene Ozolina, Elīna Vikmane•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2023•References: 36

In the aftermath of several decades of neoliberalism in Eastern Europe, the social fabric of post‐socialist societies is frayed. In this context, nationalist cultural policies and everyday displays of national belonging have emerged as key instruments of social solidarity. There has recently been a drive of state initiatives in Latvia in the field of cultural policy aimed at strengthening national identity. In this paper, we focus our attention o…

  • Sight and Touch between East and West

    Open Access•Liene Ozolina•ARTICLE•Anthropological Journal of…•2020

In this Forum contribution, I develop the idea of the learnings of post-socialism beyond Eastern Europe. I propose retaining the distinctness of the peripheral vision ‘from the East’ and purposely keeping its ‘provinciality’ in order to illuminate the qualities and shortcomings of the theory at the centre. The note starts with an ethnographic encounter in Riga and draws on it to show how the peripheral vision of post-socialist Eastern Europe can …

  • Embracing austerity? An ethnographic perspective on the Latvian public’s acceptance of austerity politics

    Liene Ozolina•ARTICLE•Journal of Baltic Studies•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 35

Latvian austerity policy following the 2008 economic crisis has been touted as a success story by some and critiqued as a socially costly experiment by others. It has remained a puzzle, however, how such harsh socio-economy policies were possible without causing sustained popular protests. Drawing on ethnographic research at an unemployment office in Riga in the aftermath of the crisis, this article considers austerity as a political and moral ph…

  • Politics Waiting

    Liene Ozolina•BOOK•Politics Waiting•2019

This book is an ethnography of the politics of waiting. While the global political economy is usually imagined through metaphors of acceleration and speed, the book reveals waiting as the shadow temporality of the contemporary logic of governance. The ethnographic site for this analysis is a state-run unemployment office in Latvia. This site not only grants the author unique access to observing everyday implementation of social assistance program…

  • Would You Flee, or Would You Fight? Tracing the Tensions at the Latvian-Russian Border

    Open Access•Liene Ozolina•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In case of Russian invasion, would you be ready to pick up arms and fight or would you flee the country?" This morally charged question has recently been pre-occupying the Latvian collective imagination. The Latvian Ministry of Defense has conducted several nation-wide surveys to monitor the public's response to it. Focusing on two controversies that recently erupted in the Latvian public sphere, this essay maps the growing militarization in Latv…

  • A state of limbo

    Open Access•Liene Ozolina, Liene Ozoliņa‐fitzgerald•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2016•Cited by: 29•References: 40

This article presents an ethnographic study of politics of waiting in a post-Soviet context. While activation has been explored in sociological and anthropological literature as a neo-liberal governmental technology and its application in post-socialist context has also been compellingly documented, waiting as a political artefact has only recently been receiving increased scholarly attention. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork at a state-run unem…

  • Raspberries, Tablecloths, and Critical Thinking

    Open Access•Liene Ozolina•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 5

This article looks at three different sites in post-Soviet Latvia that have all been subject to liberal democratic reforms: the State Audit Office, a local municipality, and civic education classes in primary schools. These sites exemplify an introduction to the kind of accountability relations that are expected to exist in a liberal democracy. Through the lens of accountability, this article exposes how the democratic reform initiatives are take…
