Futures of an unknown world
Drawing on Fredric Jameson’s and Monika Kaup’s work, this article analyzes some aspects of utopian and dystopian thinking about religion in contemporary science fiction, taking as an example Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota series (2016–2021). In these novels set in the twenty-fifth century, religion is restricted to individual counseling with so-called ‘sensayers’, a future equivalent of scholars-of-religion\s-cum-spiritual-advisors. In exploring these…
Beyond their own dwellings’
This article deals with a largely ignored or overlooked type of historical sources which, at the same time, are of utmost importance for a future polycentric history of World Christianity: journals and periodicals from the Global South in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries published not by Euro-American missionaries but by local Christians. At the end of the nineteenth century, indigenous Christian elites in Asia and Africa increas…
The Analytical Concept of Asymmetrical Dependency
In response to critiques of the 'slavery versus freedom' binary and its limitations, researchers at the international Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies ( BCDSS - www.dependency.uni-bonn.de ) at the University of Bonn tentatively employ the analytical concept of 'asymmetrical dependency' in their investigations of coercive social relations, such as slavery, debt bondage, and servitude. In this paper, we discuss some basic theoretical …
Distinguishing “Religion”. Variants of Differentiation and the Emergence of “Religion” as a Global Category in Modern Asia
The existence of religious diversity is mostly taken for granted in today’s world society. Despite all apparent differences, however, world society theory proposes the hypothesis of a single function system of religion. At the same time, in the case of religion a process of semantic unification is highly disputed. Until recently, such debates had not paid much attention to the “translingual practice” (Liu) that has produced “religion” as a global…
Relating North American Indigenous History and the Study of Religion
This article introduces a combined review symposium on Jennifer Graber’s The Gods of Indian Country: Religion and the Struggle for the American West (Oxford University Press, 2018) and Pamela Klassen’s The Story of Radio Mind: A Missionary’s Journey on Indigenous Land (University of Chicago Press, 2018). It presents the four contributions to the review symposium as well as Graber and Klassen’s response and relates the discussion of the book to br…
Global religious organizations
This chapter explores the existing theoretical literature on (global) religious organizations and discusses some historical and contemporary examples from four periods of globalization. In recent years, scholars have advocated that ‘religion has always been global’ and that religious communities are ‘among the oldest of transnational entities’. ‘Globalization’ as a concept rose to prominence in the 1980s and in the beginning referred mostly to ec…
A Call for a Permissible Plurality Within Theory-Building in a Time of Excess
Theory in a Time of Excess (Equinox 2017) serves as a useful starting point to argue for a plural understanding of theory in the study of religion. While the existing conversation often implies that there is only one acceptable way of theorizing, it seems useful to distinguish between (at least) three understandings of theory—and a fourth potentially “illegitimate” one. These four forms (discourse theories, creative theories, scientific theories,…
Klaus Koschorke i koncepcja historii światowego chrześcijaństwa w ujęciu szkoły monachijskiej
This article takes a look back at the last twenty years of what some have called the “Munich School of World Christianity” and presents the research of this group of scholars, who are working or have worked at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany. Its central focus highlights on the career and scholarly work of the groups Spiritus rector, Klaus Koschorke, who held the chair for Early and Global History of Christianity in the Faculty of…
Studying religion, audiovisual media, and the production of the ‘religious real’
This article introduces a review symposium on Birgit Meyer’s book Sensational Movies: Video, Vision, and Christianity in Ghana (Oakland: University of California Press, 2015). It summarizes the structure and argument of the book, presents the six contributions to the review symposium as well as Meyer’s response, and in closing relates the religious use of audiovisual media to theoretical debates on documentary film in order to reflect on the prod…
The Early Periodicals of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (1903–1904) and the Emergence of a Transregional and Transcontinental Indigenous-Christian Public Sphere
The early periodicals of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI), La Verdad (1903) and La Iglesia Filipina Independiente: Revista Católica (1903–1904), have been quoted as primary sources but have not been explored in their own right. Since its beginnings, the IFI understood itself as belonging to a transcontinental, global movement of independent Catholic churches. The periodicals published various letters that the IFI had received from foreign…
Museality as a Matrix of the Production, Reception, and Circulation of Knowledge Concerning Religion
Aesthetics of religion focuses on the sensual and representational aspects of religion and develops appropriate terminological tools. The idea of museality as an analytical and heuristic term for culture analysis is specified in the present paper by linking it to the history and dynamics of knowledge. Museums as institutions and cultural practice play a crucial role in the orders and politics of knowledge about religion in Europe. By means of dif…

Usually one reads that after the foundation of scientific journals the journal article took the place of scientific correspondence. It is shown here that periodicals did not replace the letter, but only supplemented it. Norms were developed for the journal article such that (in short) only the „context of justification”︁, not the „context of discovery”︁, could be discussed. Any scholar who wanted to participate in the „discussion out of which sci…
