The study of the historical experiences of the Latina/o population in the public schools formally began in the late 1970s and matured by the end of the century. A status report on the historiography of the education of this group was last done in 2001. This essay provides an overview of the huelga schools established in Houston, Texas, in 1970. For 2 years, from 1970 to 1972, the Mexican American community opposed the Houston Independent School District's plan to integrate the schools by pairing so-called White Mexican Americans with African American students. The Impact of Brown on Mexican American Desegregation Litigation, 1950s to 1980s
The Brown v. Board of Education (1954, 1955) decision of the 1950s had no appreciable impact on ongoing Mexican American desegregation litigation during the 1st decade of its implementation.
