    R J MATTHEWS•ARTICLE•Iraq•1996

A third season of a new programme of excavations at Tell Brak in north-eastern Syria took place from late March to mid-May 1996. Our continuing gratitude for support goes to the Syrian Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, especially in Damascus to the Director-General, Professor Dr Sultan Muhesen, and the Director of Excavations, Dr Adnan Bounni, in Hasake to Sd Jean Lazare, and in Der ez-Zor to Sd Assa'ad Mahmud. • Defining the Style of the Period

    R J MATTHEWS•ARTICLE•Iraq•1992

The mounds of Jemdet Nasr, 100 km south of Baghdad, were subjected to two seasons of excavations in 1926–28. These campaigns yielded a tremendous assemblage of artefacts which have never received the full publication to which they are undoubtedly entitled. In order to rectify this shortcoming a programme of publishing all known items from the 1920s seasons is now well underway, with museum work completed on the Jemdet Nasr collections in the Ashm…

  • Fragments of Officialdom from Fara

    Roger Matthews, R J MATTHEWS•ARTICLE•Iraq•1991

The site of Fara, ancient Shuruppak, lies approximately halfway between Nippur and Uruk at the very core of the Sumerian urban heartland. The city was renowned as the home of Utnapishtim who survived the flood and went to live in Dilmun where he was visited by Gilgamesh. As was the case with so many Mesopotamian mounds excavated early this century, Fara was investigated in a less than ideal manner. Almost thirty years passed between the first sea…

  • Excavations at Jemdet Nasr, 1989

    Roger Matthews, R J MATTHEWS•ARTICLE•Iraq•1990

The British Archaeological Expedition to Iraq conducted a second season of excavations at Jemdet Nasr from 21st October to 31st December 1989. Our gratitude for support is in the first place due to the Iraqi Department of Antiquities and Heritage, and in particular to its Director-General, Dr. Mu'ayyad Said Damerji, and the ever helpful staff of the External Relations section. We are also grateful to the Director of the Iraq Museum, Dr. Munir Tah…

  • Excavations at Jemdet Nasr, 1988

    Roger Matthews, R J MATTHEWS•ARTICLE•Iraq•1989

Under the auspices of the British Archaeological Expedition to Iraq a first season of renewed excavations at Jemdet Nasr took place from 19th October to 31st December 1988. In the first place we record our gratitude to the people and institutions who enabled the excavations to take place. To Dr. Mu'ayyad Said Damerji, Director-General of the Department of Antiquities and Heritage, and the staff of the External Relations section, go our sincere th…

  • Excavations at Abu Salabikh, 1985-86

    Roger Matthews, R J MATTHEWS et al.•ARTICLE•Iraq•1987

The following report covers two full seasons of work at Abu Salabikh, breaking with our previous practice of writing a report for this journal after each season. As well as reducing the space absorbed by each season, this has the advantage that work which was conceived on a two-season schedule as a single programme can be presented together. There was no work at the site in 1984, and none is planned on the Early Dynastic mounds in 1987; provision…
