  • Spacey Parents and Spacey Hosts in Foreign Direct Investment

    Open Access•Harald Badinger, Peter Egger•ARTICLE•Economica•2017•References: 21

Shocks on FDI of some parent country in a host affect the same parent's FDI in other hosts. Shocks on a parent's FDI in some host affect other parents' FDI in the same host. In general equilibrium, shocks on FDI between any country pair will affect all country pairs' FDI. Using cross‐sectional data on FDI among 22 OECD countries in 2000, we use a spatial estimation framework to allow for all three modes of interdependence simultaneously, thereby …

  • Estimation of higher‐order spatial autoregressive cross‐section models with heteroscedastic disturbances

  • Legal and Economic Issues in Completing the EU Internal Market for Services: An Interdisciplinary Perspective

    Open Access•Harald Badinger, Niklas Maydell•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 8

We investigate, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the legal and economic consequences of the EU Services Directive, which was adopted in a revised version on 12 December 2006. Studies on the effect of its original version point to moderate macroeconomic effects. Compared with its initial version, the directive has undergone substantial changes, which have eliminated many core elements that would have triggered additional liberalization in se…

  • Regional Convergence in the European Union, 1985- 1999: A Spatial Dynamic Panel Analysis

Harald Badinger, Werner Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2004•Cited by: 5

Badinger H., Müller W. G. and Tondl G. (2004) Regional convergence in the European Union, 1985- 1999: a spatial dynamic panel analysis, Reg. Studies38, 241-253. We estimate the speed of income convergence for a sample of 196 European NUTS 2 regions over the period 1985-1999. So far there is no direct estimator available for dynamic panels with spatial dependencies. We propose a two-step procedure, which involves first spatial filtering of the var…

  • Economic and Legal Issues in Reducing the Eurosystem's Excess of International Reserves

Open Access•Harald Badinger, Barbara Dutzler•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2004•References: 3

Economic studies suggest that the Eurosystem's international reserves ($370 billion) could be reduced by up to half of its existing level. The article discusses the likely size and distribution of excess reserves and proposals for their uses. Small economic gains can be expected from a reserve reduction, as well as an elimination of incompatibilities and conflicts of interest between the conduct of monetary and investment policy. A careful and co…

  • Austria's Demand for International Reserves and Monetary Disequilibrium: The Case of a Small Open Economy with a Fixed Exchange Rate Regime

    Open Access•Harald Badinger•ARTICLE•Economica•2004•References: 46

Using a vector error correction approach, I estimate Austria's demand for international reserves over the period 1985:1–1997:4 and test for short‐run effects of the disequilibrium on the national monetary market. I find that Austria's long‐run reserve demand can be described as a stable function of imports, uncertainty and the opportunity cost of holding reserves with strong economies of scale. The speed of adjustment takes a value of 38 per cent…

  • Determinants of regional unemployment: Some evidence from Austria

    Harald Badinger, Thomas Url•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2002•Cited by: 3

Badinger H. and Url T. (2002) Determinants of regional unemployment: some evidence from Austria, Reg. Studies 36, 977–988. Using a spatial filtering technique we estimate an empirical model of regional unemployment for a sample of Austrian regions. The spatial filtering technique removes the spatial correlation from the data and allows us to assess the importance of purely spatial effects. We find significant relations between the regional unempl…
