Impact of disease- and race-based discrimination in health care on pain outcomes among adults living with sickle cell disease in the United States
Studies have shown that disease- and race-based discrimination in healthcare exacerbate pain, yet little is known about the role of psychological processes and symptoms, such as internalized stigma and depressive symptoms, in the relationship between discrimination (i.e., enacted stigma) and pain. In a sample of 284 Black adults living with sickle cell disease (SCD) (54% women, M age = 35.37), we examined internalized stigma and depressive sympto…
Resilience of racial and ethnic minority older adults during the Covid-19 pandemic
Older adults from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds and with preexisting mental illness have been disproportionately vulnerable to severe illness, disability, and death due to the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study used a sample of older adults (60 +; N = 307) from a randomized clinical trial (Positive Minds-Strong Bodies [PMSB]) conducted between May 25, 2015, and March 5, 2019. Participants were recontacted to assess…
Predictors of College Enrollment Among Latinx High School Students
This study investigated the relationship between psychocultural, sociocultural, college knowledge, and citizenship status factors on Latinx high school students’ college enrollment. Participants included 307 Latinx ninth-grade students enrolled across four high schools in central Texas that were followed post–high school graduation. Results indicated that only receiving-culture acquisition and college knowledge were statistically significant pred…

Cultural artifacts such as children's storybooks may serve to facilitate learning of emotion display norms. We compared emotion displays in European American and Mexican books to infer cultural differences between the mainstream and a heritage culture to ultimately explore acculturation orientation in Hispanic storybooks. Totally, 1,059 images were coded from 10 popular storybooks from each cultural group. We focused on emotion type (positive, ne…
The Influence of Loneliness and Interpersonal Relations on Latina/o Middle School Students’ Wellbeing
This study examined associations of loneliness and relationships (e.g., teacher/student relationships, peer support, and family support) with wellbeing among Latina/o middle school students. A hierarchical regression analysis demonstrated that age and loneliness predicted wellbeing; older students and students with high levels of loneliness reported higher wellbeing. The interaction effect between loneliness and peer support suggested that peer s…
