Samuel Hieron'S “Worldling”: A Funeral Sermon, 1618 and the Controversy over Eulogies
After the Reformation, English clergymen debated the efficacy of funeral eulogies. Some believed they flattered the deceased and might be seen as prayers for the dead. Because the bereaved wanted to hear about the goodness of their beloved, most preachers gave eulogies, some in a generalized form for Godly imitation, not expressing the deceased's individuality. Samuel Hieron, a Puritan preacher, refused to give eulogies. In two that were printed,…

Mary Queen of Scots: An Illustrated Life
Mary Queen of Scots has been the subject of innumerable plays, poems, songs, operas, films, novels and biographies. It is not difficult to see why. The first 21 years of her life were packed with dramatic incident, including her flight to France, widowhood at an early age, the murder of her secretary and second husband, abduction and rape by a third, and finally captivity and escape from a remote castle in the Highlands of Scotland. Her last 18 y…

Queenship: Politics and Gender in Tudor England
In the Tudor century both queens consort and queens regnant presided at court. The role of consorts reflected that of noblewomen, who were expected to produce a male heir to continue their husband's line, to oversee some household functions, to supervise their female attendants, and to support religious enterprises deemed appropriate to women. In addition, their royal status offered consorts opportunities to engage in court politics and to influe…

Sexual Heresy at the Court of Henry VIII
Scholars have long described the reasons for Anne Boleyn's execution and the nature of her guilt. Recent analyses have suggested that Henry VIII lost interest in his second wife after she miscarried of a male child in 1536 and that his secretary, Thomas Cromwell, wanted to exclude her family from positions of power at court. With royal approval, so it is claimed, Cromwell caused the queen and five men to be executed for the fictitious crimes of a…

Wives and Daughters: The Women of Sixteenth Century England
Sex Discrimination after Death: A Seventeenth-Century English Study
Funeral sermons published in England during a three-decade period (1601–1630) were examined for possible sex bias. Because London dominated the publishing business, all but four, regardless of where they were preached, were issued in that city. A clear pattern of male preference was found. A lower number of funeral sermons for women was published. Interestingly, the number of times these sermons were reprinted or reissued did not strongly reinfor…

More's Richard III and the mystery plays
An analysis of Thomas Mare's English version of The history of King Richard III indicates that the popular mystery cycles influenced his composition. Associated with the celebrations of Corpus Christi Day, the cycles present a series of biblical plays, beginning with the Creation and ending with the Last Judgment. The important themes of tyranny and sacrifice, which this drama explores, also loom large in Richard III . The theme of tyranny is loo…

This biography presents Drake through the accounts of friends and enemies on both the national and personal level. From his family's fierce love of Protestantism, and their early poverty which drove him to sea while still a boy, until his death at sea in 1596, it was a life of drama in which opportunism, courage, greed, religion and national policy all played a part, alongside the sailing skill and navigational brilliance of the first man to sail…
