Flint Knapping and its Objectives in the Early Natufian
Not so unusual Neanderthal bone tools
Geomorphology of the upper Kalguty Basin, Ukok Plateau, Russian Altai mountains
As part of an archaeological research project, we investigate the geomorphology of the cold and arid study area by combining field mapping with use of orthoimages and DEM. To the north of a broad trunk valley floor, gentle slopes continuously vegetated culminate around 3000 m, while to the south steep slopes reaching to 3500 m are deeply incised and covered mainly by regolith. The basin has been intensively glaciated as evidenced by the till cove…

The Neandertal bone industry at Chagyrskaya cave, Altai Region, Russia
Unshaped Bone Tools from Denisova Cave, Altai
The initial manuscript, validated by all the authors, was largely modified without informing the first two signatories before being formatted for publication. To not block the release of the issue in press, the order of the authors has been changed, the first two authors (becoming respectively the 4th and 3rd) acknowledging the raw data but not their interpretation nor their overall perspective.
The Middle and Upper Paleolithic Bone Tools from South Chamber of Denisova Cave
Excavations undertaken in the upper portion of the Pleistocene deposits from South Chamber of Denisova Cave yielded a set of bone tools in association with numerous stone artifacts. The Middle Palaeolithic layer 12 revealed bone retouchers and a retouched bone fragment. Along with lightly modified bone tools such as retouchers and retouched pieces, Layer 11 has yielded such stone tools as a point, a needle, a polisher and a tool blank, all attrib…

An Experimental Study of Percussion Technologies in the Minusinsk Basin
Technological and traceological analyses of petroglyphic art are based on experiments at various levels, from the general to the more specific. In this article we formulate the objectives of future technological studies into the petroglyphs of the Minusinsk Basin. We address the morphology and material of tools, and principal technological devices used including direct and indirect percussion (piquetage). Based on experiments using local rocks an…
The Collective Research Project “Cussac Cave” (Dordogne, France)
Following the discovery of Cussac Cave (Le Buisson-de-Cadouin, Dordogne) in 2000 and its expertise by a first group of researchers (N. Aujoulat and collaborators), the services of the Ministry of Culture adopted a rigorous heritage policy to protect the cave, ensure its security and to acquire the property on which it is located in order to create an archaeological reserve that would be the property of the State. Environmental studies of the enti…

L’allée couverte du bois d’Archemont à Méréaucourt (Somme)
This monument was erected in a trench, during the recent Neolithic, and was used for six or eight hundred years as a collective grave. It presents two funerary layers separated by an anthropogenic infilling. The burials in both layers were primary as well as secondary, with at least 34 individuals for the lower layer and 35 for the upper layer. During the course of this long period, various interventions occurred, including the removal of bones a…
The Origins of Ground-edge Axes
The grinding of stone to make sharp cutting edges did not evolve with the emergence of biologically modern humans in Africa, but late in the Pleistocene at the completion or nearcompletion of the Out-of-Africa 2 migration. Here we discuss the earliest securely-dated fragment of ground-edge axe from Australia, dated at 35,500 cal. bp, an age slightly older or comparable to the earliest ages for edge-grinding from the Pacific Ocean's western seaboa…
Nawarla Gabarnmang, a 45,180±910 cal BP Site in Jawoyn Country, Southwest Arnhem Land Plateau
Recent excavations at Nawarla Gabarnmang in Jawoyn country, southwest Arnhem Land have produced a long sequence of AMS radiocarbon determinations on individual pieces of charcoal reliably associated with stone artefacts dating back to 45,180±910 cal BP. It represents one of the earliest radiocarbon-dated archaeological sites in Australia. Here we report on initial results

Earliest Evidence for Ground-Edge Axes
Evidence for the world’s earliest stone tools dates to 3.4 million years ago and pre-dates the earliest known Homo species in eastern Africa. However ground-edged tools did not appear until the dispersal of cognitively fully modern Homo sapiens sapiens out of Africa. We report on the discovery of the earliest securely dated ground-edge implement in the world at Nawarla Gabarnmang (northern Australia). The fragment of ground-edge axe is sandwiched…
The child burial of the Figuier Cave provides not only one of the very few human specimens known in the Rhône valley for the whole Upper Paleolithic, but moreover, at a larger scale, a rare example of grave for the early Upper Paleolithic. It has been excavated by Maurice Veyrier in 1947 and briefly published in 1953. A technological and traceological analysis of the lithic assemblage found in the grave, crossed with the data from the personal do…

Excavations were resumed at Hayonim terrace in 1980. The uppermost structures are of Byzantine to Chalcolithic Age. Late Natufian layers were uncovered underneath. The remnants of a house and its surroundings, with one built pit, one large limestone mortar and two burials seem to pertain to the same stratigraphie horizon. Some wild barley was found associated with the fill of this occupation level. Among other structures, still of Late Natufian t…

The Near-Eastern Mousterian is characterized by a large development of Levallois debitage industries, mainly focusing on the production of triangular elements (Levallois points, triangular and subtriangular flakes), most often resulting from a convergent unipolar mode of exploitation. Among the tools identified in these industries, the first usewear analyses had emphasised the presence of projectile points. However, recent work leads us to modify…

TRANSIT, an experimental archaeological program in periglacial environment
The aim of the experimental archaeological program TRANSIT is to improve the scientific study of Paleolithic sites. This program is based on studies and experiments carried out at high altitudes in the French Alps. One of its goals is to assess the effects of periglacial processes on spatial distributions within archaeological assemblages and on artifacts and bones. Research on sedimentary environments elucidates stratogenesis in periglacial cont…
