  • Aspects of economic history

    Open Access•C C Wrigley•CHAPTER•Colonial Moment in Africa•1990

FOUNDATIONS OF THE COLONIAL EXPORT ECONOMY The economic changes that took place in Africa in the period under review have been summarised in terms of varied implication, as the economic revolution, the second stage of Africa's involvement in the world economy, the intensification of dependent peripheral capitalism, the completion of the open economy, or simply as the cuffing of Africans into the modern world. The concrete fact, however, from whic…

    Open Access•C C Wrigley•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1989•References: 10

Mr Wrigley (Reader Emeritus in History, University of Sussex) presents himself as a witness to British prehistory 'from without', because he is a 'historian ofsorts' rather than archaeologist. Surprised to see prehistorians turning to ethnography and contemporary social theory, more than the history of intervening centuries, he offers here a different perspective

  • Aspects of economic history

    Open Access•C C Wrigley•CHAPTER•The Cambridge History of Africa•1986

This chapter summarises the economic changes that took place in Africa. Half a century or more of active 'legitimate' commerce had pre-adapted the peoples of West Africa in varying degrees to the twentieth-century type of exchange economy. Gold production in South Africa represented over half of the world output in the 1920s, though it declined to about a third in the next decade. In East Africa, moreover, European artisans and small traders were…

    Open Access•C C Wrigley•ARTICLE•History in Africa•1981•Cited by: 2•References: 13

The Lwo language, a cluster of dialects belonging to the Western branch of the Nilotic family, was spoken as a mother tongue at the end of the colonial period by some two and a half million people scattered over a vast area of the Upper Nile basin from the Shilluk country in the Sudan to central Uganda and from northeast Zaire to western Kenya. The several components of this stock vary greatly in size, from the five thousand people who comprise t…

    Open Access•C C Wrigley•ARTICLE•History in Africa•1974•Cited by: 4•References: 7

In 1901 the katikkiro or ‘prime minister’ of Buganda, Apolo Kagwa, published a vernacular history of his country entitled The Book of the Kings of Buganda . Most of this work dealt with the events of his own lifetime, but it also included a circumstantial account of the twenty-nine reigns which, he alleged, had preceded that of King Mutesa, who received the first European visitors and who died in 1884. This version of the Ganda past has not since…
