The Dramatic Rise of the New Society Journals in Economics
We produce updated rankings of economics journals based on established and new methodologies, and use these rankings to document the spectacular rise of the new society journals in economics. We show that, while several factors (editor reputations, editor experience, citations from parent journals and the number of articles published) help determine these journals’ impact factors, none help explain why the new journals outperform natural comparis…
The Employment Impact of the Provision of Public Health Insurance: A Further Examination of the Effect of the 2005 TennCare Contraction
In a 2014 paper, Garthwaite, Gross, and Notowidigdo examined the employment impact of the 2005 TennCare contraction. We extend their approach in several directions. First, we use consistent Conley-Taber estimation. Second, we transform their estimates to make them comparable to previous work; the transformed effects have large confidence intervals. We estimate their models using several larger data sets in an attempt to get more precise estimates…

Did Expanding Medicaid Affect Welfare Participation
In a widely cited 1995 paper, Aaron Yelowitz concluded that Medicaid eligibility expansions for children were associated with increased labor force participation and reduced welfare participation among single mothers. The authors of the present study, using data from the 1988-96 Current Population Surveys, re-examine the evidence presented by Yelowitz. They find that Yelowitz's results resulted from two factors: he imposed a restriction on the pa…
Testing for Full Insurance Using Exogenous Information
We strongly reject the full-insurance hypothesis, using testing variables that are not decision variables for the households under investigation. We find that households are not insured against changes in the unemployment rate associated with the household head's occupational category. Using this exogenous information, we also investigate the appropriateness of exogeneity assumptions on idiosyncratic variables that have been used as testing varia…

Education, Unemployment, and Earnings
Using data on adult male workers, we first investigate the incremental effect of 1 year of schooling on unemployed hours and use this calculation to explain the difference in the proportional effects of schooling on earnings and wages. Schooling apparently reduces unemployed hours by reducing the incidence of unemployment spells, but it does not significantly affect their duration. We next test whether unemployed hours represent real constraints …
