Community-centered Care in the Justice System
Rationale, Design, and Methods for Nen Unkumbi/Edahiyedo (“We Are Here Now”)
American Indian (AI) youth in the United States experience disproportionate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) disparities relative to their non-Indigenous, white counterparts, including increased rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), earlier sexual debut, increased rates of teen birth, and reduced access to SRH services. Past research shows that to improve SRH outcomes for AI youth in reservation communities, interventions must addr…

Racial/Ethnic and Gender Differences in Associations of Medication-Assisted Therapy and Reduced Opioid Use between Outpatient Treatment Admission and Discharge
Medication-assisted therapy (MAT) for opioid use disorders is an effective treatment strategy. Racial/ethnic and gender disparities in MAT utilization have been documented, but less is known about disparities in MAT outcomes. We used the Treatment Episodes Dataset-Discharges (TEDS-D; 2015- 2017) to identify outpatient treatment episodes with heroin or illicit opioids indicated at admission (n = 232,547). We used multivariate logistic regression t…
A Community-Based Evaluation of a Culturally Grounded, American Indian After-School Prevention Program
Programs serving American Indian (AI) youth are an important component of maintaining cultural identity and healthy lifestyles. The current research took a community-engaged approach to evaluate an urban AI youth after-school program that has transitioned into a culturally grounded prevention program. Ways to create a successful research collaboration between AI communities and academics is discussed as well as implications for understanding the …

Bitcoin was conceived in 2008 as an attempt to alleviate trust in government and banks which was at a low during this period of financial crisis. However, with bitcoin trust does not dissipate, rather it shifts. Trust moves from trust in banks or states to trust in algorithms and encryption software. There is a …

Internet-based video-group delivery of Healthy Relationships – A “prevention with positives” intervention
Women living with HIV (WLH) face challenges related to stigma, disclosure of HIV status, and negotiating safer sex. Several effective behavioral interventions, such as Healthy Relationships (HR), help WLH address these challenges and are disseminated by the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions project. However, many WLH living in poor urban or rural locations cannot access interven…

Exchange and subjectivity, commodity, and gift
This article offers a reading of the effect of exchange on subjectivity. Two modes of exchange are discussed: commodity-exchange and gift-exchange. Following Marx, Simmel, Lukács, and Bewes, commodity exchange is argued to be detrimental to subjectivity insofar as it leads to abstract, mediated social relationships, and reifies the subject. Debates around the notion and application of reification are investigated. The anthropological insight of M…
Lessons from Witchetty Grubs and Eskimos
This paper investigates the French anthropological context of the work of Jean Baudrillard. The religious anthropological though of Émile Durkheim, Marcel Mauss and Georges Bataille is considered. This context is vital to the understanding of Baudrillard's oeuvre. Analysis is given to Mauss's work on the seasonal variations of the Eskimo and the prayers of the Witchetty Grub clan. Two core ideas emerge: the decline of the religious and thereby th…
