Quit Playing Language Games with My Heart; or, Conversational AI and Knowledge Sharing
This paper shares guidance for designing conversational AI based on findings from linguistic and social analysis of core shifts introduced by large language models. When Duolingo and Babbel added AI features to their language learning apps, the games that users play on the apps was transformed, giving us a window into the structure of AI-driven user interactions in general. Dynamic, turn-taking dialogues resembling natural conversation now appear…
Eye Tracking in Medical Ethnography
Using eye tracking in ethnographic research poses numerous theoretical and practical challenges. How might devices originally intended to record individuals' vision of two-dimensional planes be useful in interpersonal contexts with dynamic visual interfaces? What would the technology reveal about collegial environments in which different levels of knowledge and expertise come together and inform decision-making processes? Why would pupil movement…
Historiography, affect, and the neurosciences
Recent historiography has put to rest debates over whether to address the neurosciences. The question is how? In this article, I stage a dialogue between neurohistory and the history of the emotions. My primary goal is to survey these two clusters and clarify their conceptual commitments. Both center on the role of affect in embodied subjectivity; but their accounts widely diverge. Whereas neurohistorians tend to treat affects as automatic bodily…

New York: Columbia UP, 2013. 354pages. Warren Breckman’s study of radical social theory in the aftermath of Marxism’s collapse is a formidable and surprisingly predictive account of Marx’s recent legacy in France. Adventures of the Symbolic: Post-Marxism an…
Alfred Fouillée Between Science and Spiritualism
This essay examines the rapprochement between science and metaphysics that the French philosopher Alfred Fouillée staged in his writings from 1872 up until his death in 1912. Amidst the influx of new research in scientific psychology inundating France in the late nineteenth century, Fouillée's thought stands out for its creative effort to advance a new spiritualist philosophy on the basis of positive scientific advancements. Fouillée's work is si…
Confronting the brain in the classroom
During the influx of neurological research into France from across Europe that took place rapidly in the late 19th century, the philosophy course in lycées (the French equivalent of high schools) was mobilized by education reformers as a means of promulgating the emergent brain sciences and simultaneously steering their cultural resonance. I contend that these linked prongs of philosophy’s public mission under the Third Republic reconciled contra…
Bergson Comes to America
This article documents Henri Bergson's visit to America in 1913. It is based on original research carried out and at the archives of the Sorbonne and universities at which the French philosopher spoke. The conceptual stakes of Bergson's visit turned on the dualisms in his thought. I first highlight the centrality of the problem of dualism in Bergson's early works. I then examine how Americans treated the problem in three contexts: Bergson's close…
