  • The size of the offshore sector in the Norwegian economy

Open Access•Ola Honningdal Grytten, Viktoriia Koilo•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2025

Writers on Norwegian economic history often claim that industries related to the sea played a major role in the Norwegian economy for centuries. However, little has been done to quantify this sector’s contribution to the economy. The present paper seeks to quantify the size of the key offshore industries compared to GDP and exports. To do so it has been necessary to draw on new historical national account calculations and export data in addition …

  • Regional Gross Domestic Product (RGDP) Disparities in Interwar and Restored Independent Lithuania: A Long-Term Cross-Time Comparison

Open Access•Zenonas Norkus, Jurgita Markevičiūtė et al.•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2024

We provide a pioneering estimation of the regional Gross Domestic Product (rGDP) of the interwar Republic of Lithuania in 1923. This is the only year when a census of the interwar population was conducted, providing data necessary for the application of the Geary-Stark method of indirect estimation of regional output. We also measure productivity disparities across the regions in 1923 and 2001–2020 by Coefficient of Variation (CV), Mean Logarithm…

  • Demographic Continuity as a Necessary Condition of Performable Post-communist Token Social Restorations

Open Access•Zenonas Norkus, Jurgita Markevičiūtė et al.•ARTICLE•Filosofija. Sociologija•2023

We test the hypothesis that demographic continuity was a necessary condition of performable token post-communist social restorations. Demographic continuity means sufficient overlapping between populations of original and restored systems. Token social restoration refers to restorations where original and restored systems are identical. It is opposed to type restoration where original and restored systems are numerically different instances of th…

This article offers revised historical national accounts for Norway for the period 1816-2019. The revisions have been carried out on both the production side and the expenditure side. The major difference is that the new series include a significantly broader set of data than the previous series. This makes it possible to calculate GDP for a wider set of industries with more detailed and precise data, in a way that is more in line with modern nat…

  • Revising price history: Consumer price index for Norway 1492–2018

    Ola Honningdal Grytten•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2020

The paper presents a new combined annual cost of living and consumer price index for Norway covering 1492–2018, indicating that Norwegian price history has to be revised. The new historical price index is constructed on a significantly richer data material, which also makes it cover a longer period of price history than the existing one. This is made possible by the compilation of quantitative data from numerous sources, mostly originating from t…

Ola Honningdal Grytten, Camilla Brautaset•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2000•References: 3

Interwar Norway saw a depressed labor market with mass unemployment both in the 1920s and 1930s. To protect family household income, breadwinners were preferred in the labor market. In consequence, discriminatory measures were carried out against married women and the younger part of the labor force with minor family support responsibilities. The article offers new estimates of employment, unemployment, family support responsibilities, labor part…

  • The demand for consumer goods in the modernisation of the Norwegian economy, 1850–1920

Ola Honningdal Grytten, Kjell Bjørn Minde•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•1998

This article shows that purchasing power and consumption grew considerably in Norway in the period 1850–1920. This growth, however, brought with it only very minor changes in the patterns of consumption and demand towards industrial products and services. However, there were changes in the demand for food products in that consumption moved from basic vegetarian products towards highly-processed animal food products. Thus, the changes in Norwegian…

  • The scale of Norwegian interwar unemployment in international perspective

    Ola Honningdal Grytten•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•1995

The author offers revised estimates of Norwegian interwar unemployment, and argues that total unemployment as a percentage of the labour force was considerably lower than the unemployment rate for trade unionists. The new figures, suggesting annual unemployment to hover between 5 and 10 percent for most of the interwar period, seem somewhat lower than the scale of Norwegian interwar unemployment according to the conventional view. However, they c…
