Food Security, Nitrates Capitalism, and the Haber–Bosch Revolution
This article reinterprets the early history of the Haber–Bosch process of ammonia synthesis through the transnational development of synthetic nitrogen production at Ludwigshafen am Rhein and Billingham-on-Tees, County Durham. It argues that the nitrates revolution in the early twentieth century was not simply a technological breakthrough but a contested project linking industrial strategy, state power, and food security. Tracing the British gove…
Histories and Futures of Business in a Turbulent World
When it comes to events that have marked turning points in the relationship between global governance and business history, I have focused on the role of international crises to understand the forces shaping relations between firms, states, and global governance frameworks. Such an approach stems from the fact that I am primarily an historian of international relations, and much of my research and writing is concentrated on European and global hi…
Trade, Law, and the Global Order of 1919
World War One fundamentally transformed the constitutive elements of global order—states, markets, and civil society.1 The relationship of trade regimes to the political order in the aftermath of the war is one of the most understudied of these transformations. Before 1914, the world economy was underpinned by a network of bilateral trade treaties that provided reciprocal guarantees of non-discrimination through most-favored-nations (MFN) clauses…
The Ben Pimlott Memorial Lecture 2019—Britain and the Making of Global Order after 1919
On the centenary of the Paris Peace Conference, the lecture explores Britain's pivotal role in the development of a rules-based global order. It reveals how Britons fashioned the practices and norms of new international institutions, including the League of Nations, to manage relations between states, markets, and civil society. The lecture uncovers why economic, social, and environmental issues took on as much importance as the more familiar con…

The Cambridge History of the Second World War
War is often described as an extension of politics by violent means. With contributions from twenty-eight eminent historians, Volume 2 of The Cambridge History of the Second World War examines the relationship between ideology and politics in the war's origins, dynamics and consequences. Part I examines the ideologies of the combatants and shows how the war can be understood as a struggle of words, ideas and values with the rival powers expressin…
Modern Europe, 1789-Present
Now covering the whole of Europe from the French Revolution to the present day, this major new edition has been completely revised and brought up-to-date. The approach embraces the whole continent from both national and regional perspectives, and combines political survey with grass roots 'people' history. Bringing this history vividly to life, the authors use a very broad range of sources including memoirs, archives, letters, songs and newspaper…
The Economic Consequences of the War and the Peace
The modern, globalized economy had emerged with vigor and reach in the nineteenth century, but was no more a guarantor of domestic or world peace after 1918 than it had been in 1914
War, Agriculture and Food
Food security lies at the heart of Europe’s mid-century crisis. This is recognised implicitly in this wide-ranging volume that seeks to take Europe in the round: North, South, East and West; belligerent and neutral. The text is divided by the editors, Paul Brassley, Yves Segers and Leen Van Molle, into four parts. The first part seeks to establish the ‘International Perspective’, the second explores ‘State Regulation and Agricultural Policy’, the…
The Austrian hunger crisis and the genesis of international organization after the First World War
From its foundation in 1918, the new Austrian republic was gripped by famine and a crisis of confidence in its currency that threatened to tip the new state into hyperinflation and revolution. This article shows how western efforts to aid Austria combat famine and its financial crisis were linked, and how they had a profound impact on the new League of Nations, the world's first multi-purpose intergovernmental organization. It also demonstrates t…
Securing the World Economy
A study of the League of Nations' work in promoting economic and financial co-operation in the wake of the Great Depression, and a major account of the League's relationship with the USA in the 1930s and 1940s.
Feeding the World
In the first half of the twentieth century, economic and social science was critical to the expansion of transnational and international relations. But this economic and social dimension in the international history of the period—or the international history of ideas about economy and society—was subsequently lost in the search for the origins of two world wars and the Cold War. This paper seeks to recover these lost connections between the ideas…
Time, Manner, Place
The article examines the origins and relationships between global, transnational history and international history, and the potential of these fields of enquiry to reshape European history. Divided into three parts, and drawing on a range of global and European examples, the article examines some of the ways in which transnational history holds the potential to blur established chronological boundaries and offer new approaches to the mapping of t…

Reparations in the Long Run
This paper explores how policy-makers during the Second World War attempted to “learn the lessons” of history from the reparations settlement imposed after the First World War. It shows how these lessons were developed and articulated in the formulation of, in particular, American foreign policy, and also their consequences for foreign policy during and after the Second World War. The paper demonstrates the important role of European advisors in …
Transnationalism and the League of Nations

It offers a sustained investigation into how this international organisation operated that assesses the transnational aspects of its work in relation to its inter-governmental responsibilities, and demonstrates the wide-ranging contribution of the organisation's secretariat. The second part of the article establishes the way in which…

The Fetishes of So-Called International Bankers’
With his sharp denunciation of the ‘old fetishes of so-called international bankers’ for fixed exchange rates on the gold-exchange standard, President Franklin D. Roosevelt allegedly consigned the World Economic and Monetary Conference to failure. 1 The conference had been convened in June 1933 to tackle the crippling levels of ‘beggar-thy-neighbour’ economic policies which were strangling the international economy during the Great Depression; it…
