The Way I See Itpeople Are From Earth, Machines Are From Outer Space
Prologue: In the summer of 2008, I locked myself away in a secluded, secret location and wrote a book. My publisher didn't like it. "Boring," he said. Boring! Me? So I rewrote the beginning, which I present here to you. (Interested readers can find the original version, "Sociable Design," on my website, jnd.org.)

Explorations in Cognition
Categorization of action slips.
A slip is the error that occurs when a person does an action that is not intended. In this article I examine several collections of slips, primarily of actions, with the aim of devising a theoretical explication. A theory of action is outlined in which an action sequence is represented by a parent schema and numerous child schemas, in which several action schemas can be active at any one time, and in which each schema has a set of triggering cond…

Direct Manipulation Interfaces
In this paper we seek a cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces. We identify two underlying phenomena that give rise to the sensation of directness. One has to do with the information processing distance between the user's intentions and the facilities provided by the machine. Reduction of this distance makes the interface feel direct by reducing the effort required of the user to accomplish go…

Les artefacts cognitifs
The author examines the functioning of a particular type of complex object: cognitive artefacts. This object is conceived to maintain, to display and to operate upon information. Two views of cognitive artifacts are distinguished: the system view and the personal view. Cognitive artifacts act constantly on two levels: the level of execution and the level of evaluation.

Affordance, conventions, and design
I was quietly lurking in the background of a CHI-Web discussion, when I lost all reason: I just couldn’t take it anymore. “I put an affordance there, ” a participant would say, “I wonder if the object affords clicking ... “ Affordances this, affordances that. And no data, just opinion. Yikes! What had I unleashed upon the world? “No! ” I screamed, and out came this article. I don’t know if it changed anyone’s minds, but it brought the CHI-Web dis…
