  • Renata Wasserman and Inter-Americanism

    Open Access•Earl E Fitz•ARTICLE•Ilha do Desterro A Journal of…•2022

This essay considers Prof. Wasserman as a practitioner of the field known, variously, as inter-American literary study, hemispheric literature, and the literature of the Americas. It also argues that she is a leader in this field because of her discerning critical observations but also because she proves the singular importance of Brazilian letters in this comparatively American perspective. My study especially celebrates her work on two Brazilia…

  • Machado de Assis' Reception and the Transformation of the Modern European Novel

    Open Access•Earl E Fitz•ARTICLE•Portuguese Literary and Cultural…•2017

This essay is concerned with Machado’s contribution to the evolution of the modern novel’s form. My thesis is that, because of the innovations that he wrought, Machado now needs to be considered as one of the modern novel’s great masters. In making this argument, I stress three points: 1) that Machado knew the European novel very well and that he knew in his own mind how he could improve it; 2) that Machado did improve it, breaking new ground for…

    Earl E Fitz•ARTICLE•Luso-Brazilian Review•2013

  • Native American Literature and Its Place in the Inter-American Project

    Earl E Fitz•ARTICLE•Comparative American Studies An…•2013•References: 14

Issues of Native American literature and culture are placed in a comparative and inter-American perspective, where texts from Canada, the United States, Spanish America, and Brazil are discussed and contrasted. Native American texts are analyzed in the context of inter-American literary study, which is defined as an interdisciplinary approach to the literatures of North, Central, and South America. The argument is made that Native American litera…

    Earl E Fitz, E Fitz•ARTICLE•Luso-Brazilian Review•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Ta…

  • Internationalizing the Literature of the Portuguese-Speaking World

    Earl E Fitz, Earl Fitz•ARTICLE•Hispania•2002

This article argues that the literature of the Portuguese-speaking world can and should seek to internationalize itself in the early decades of the twenty-first century and that there are five contexts which should prove to be effective vehicles in helping to do this: Latin American literature; inter-American literature; Europe; Africa; and world literature. In each category, the author offers some specific examples of how this might be done, tha…

  • Ambiguity and Gender in the New Novel of Brazil and Spanish America. A Comparative Assessment

Open Access•Gustavo Fares, Judith A Payne et al.•ARTICLE•Chasqui•1997

In this first book-length study to compare the new novels of both Spanish America and Brazil, the authors deftly examine the differing perceptions of ambiguity as they apply to questions of gender and the participation of females and males in the establishment of Latin American narrative models. Their daring thesis: the Brazilian new novel developed a more radical form than its better-known Spanish-speaking cousin because it had a significantly d…
