The Amulets from Ketef Hinnom
This article represents a substantial revision and rereading of the two silver plaques found at Ketef Hinnom in 1979. Our new analysis of detailed, high-resolution images made by West Semitic Research reveals traces of letters that were not previously identified as well as clarification of letters that were previously much harder to read and identify. The Challenges of Ketef Hinnom
The two paleo-Hebrew Ketef Hinnom inscriptions are famous for being our oldest biblical manuscripts. (Yet they contain even more readings than the famous priestly blessing of Numbers 6.) The present analysis provides the most reliable readings to date. They clarify two points of dispute: the date and nature of the artifacts. The authors support the thesis that these inscriptions constitute amulets with apotropaic functions and date them to the en…

This article is the final report of the excavation carried out 33 years ago by Prof…

Aspartic acid racemization in teeth from Ketef Hinnom, a late Holocene burial cave in Jerusalem
The Ketef Hinnom tombs, lying just outside the walls of the old city of Jerusalem, were carved out of bedrock during the 7th–5th century B.C. Several artefacts dating to the Late Hellenistic Period (ca. 100 B.C.) have also been found within the tombs. Aspartic acid (Asp) racemization in 31 samples of human tooth dentine from these tombs was analyzed in order to evaluate the possible reuse of the tombs during this later period. A range of D/L Asp …
