    Open Access•Luy Dau, Paula Barros et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2025

This scoping review explores the relationship between urban density and child health and wellbeing, focusing on how urban density has been measured and its association with various child health outcomes. By analysing 53 studies spanning from 1972 to 2023, we identify significant variability in how urban density is defined and measured and mixed evidence regarding its relationship with different child health outcomes. Children, a unique yet marginalized social group, hold immense potential for driving meaningful social and environmental change, both in their current lives and as future stewards of the planet. However, their significant contributions often depend on the mechanisms and opportunities adults create to facilitate their participation and inclusion. This places local governance at a crucial juncture, mediating children’s involvement in shaping their …

  • Transformative Local Governments: Addressing Social Urban Challenges by Bringing People and Politics Together

Open Access•Juanee Cilliers, Ana Maria Vargas Falla et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Planning•2024

As the tier of government closest to people, local government plays a key role in answering local needs and aspirations. However, local governments are often under-resourced, leaving them inadequately responsive to many of these critical local demands. Moreover, accountability to their citizens, which is the core of a well-functioning local democracy, is often lacking because the necessary formal laws and informal norms do not enable citizens to …

  • Does restorativeness support liveliness on commercial streets

Paula Barros, Ved Mehta•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Design•2024

The role of restorativeness in attracting and retaining people on commercial streets has been under-researched. To examine this topic, this convergent parallel mixed methods study was conducted on four commercial streets in Brazil. It included a quantitative evaluation of correlations between a set of microscale aspects of commercial streets and liveliness, and a qualitative thematic analysis of users’ experiences informed by the Attention Restor…

  • Carmen Miranda

With cities continuing to grow at rapid rates across the globe, daily exposure to traffic, noise, crowding, information overload and other stressors have exacerbated urban dwellers’ need for restoration.
