  • Peasant Portraits. Rural Self-Representations in the German Lands Since the Middle Ages

    Open Access•Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•Res Historica•2025

This article examines self-representations of peasant communities in the German lands since the Middle Ages. It focuses on two well-documented contexts of collective expression: key political ideals in the records of imperial villages (i.e., rural polities without an intermediate territorial lord) on the one hand, and shared cultural meanings emerging from numerous writings as well as objects deposited in the tower spheres of prominent buildings …

  • Nachrichten für die Nachwelt. Turmkugelarchive in der Erinnerungskultur des deutschsprachigen Europa

    Open Access•Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•Historische Zeitschrift•2021

    Open Access•Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•Historische Anthropologie•2020

Surveying perceptions and repercussions of early modern public drinking, this essay discusses, first, the general consumption framework c.1400–1800; second, evidence for excess and links to crime; third, economic and cultural services. While problems of sources and perspective complicate assessments, it is suggested that – compared to more recent times – the ambivalent picture includes distinctive factors such as the greater social and fiscal rel…

  • Catholicism Decentralized: Local Religion in the Early Modern Periphery

    Open Access•Beat Kümin, Felicita Tramontana•ARTICLE•Church History•2020•References: 6

Expanding upon recent work on the heterogeneity of Catholicism and the challenges facing Tridentine reformers, this article examines local religion in two "extreme" settings: the village republic of Gersau in Central Switzerland and the missionary territory of the Custody of the Holy Land. Following conceptual remarks, the authors sketch the distinct secular contexts as well the phased evolution of localized networks for the administration of the…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern European History, 1350–1750, I: Peoples and Place, and II: Cultures and Power, ed. Hamish Scott

    Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2017

This is a weighty synthesis of the state of scholarship on early modern Europe. Aimed at an advanced audience of graduate students and researchers, it repays close engagement with its rich and dense contents. Book titles and cover illustrations signal the overarching thematic (rather than chronological) structure of the work: Volume I (divided into three parts: ‘Fundamentals’, ‘Societies and Economies’ and ‘Churches, Faiths and Beliefs’) carries …

"Social and cultural studies are experiencing a 'spatial turn'. Micro-sites, localities, empires as well as virtual or imaginary spaces attract increasing attention. In most of these works, space emerges as a social construct rather than a mere container. This collection examines the potential and limitations of spatial approaches for the political history of pre-industrial Europe. Adopting a broad definition of 'political', the volume concentrat…

Beat Kümin, Beat A Kümin•BOOK•Reformations Old and New•2016

This collection of essays examines the practical impact of religious change in Central and North Western Europe from the 15th to the 17th century. It focuses on the effects of reform on clergy, church resources, ecclesiastical patronage, education and poor relief. The title reflects the elementary conclusion that there was no one monolithic experience of ’Reformation’, that initiatives were taken for very different reasons, and that they displaye…

  • The Penguin History of Europe . Volume V: Christendom Destroyed: Europe 1517–1648 , by Mark Greengrass

    Open Access•Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2016

This is a weighty book with a big thesis: that the period usually demarcated by the indulgence affair and the Peace of Westphalia saw the demise of the (western) Christendom ‘project’ and the emergence of a ‘projection’ called Europe; in other words, the transformation of a belief community into a geographical notion. Over the course of one-and-a-half centuries, preoccupations with sovereignty and reasons of state superseded the medieval ideal of…

  • Rural Autonomy and Popular Politics in Imperial Villages

    Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•German History•2015

Late medieval sources record over a hundred imperial villages without a territorial overlord. Apart from representation in the diet, their constitutional status resembled that of imperial free cities. Only a handful survived the early modern pressures of state formation and territorialisation. This essay examines the political culture and external relations of five rural communities which retained immediate ties to the emperor until the end of th…

  • Public houses and civic tensions in early modern Bern

    Open Access•Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•Urban History•2007

This article examines the delicate relationship between the civic privilege of wine retailing and the constitutional emphasis on order in a city republic. Burghers appreciated the revenues from beverage sales, while urban authorities worried about destabilizing effects. In the context of state formation, Bern claimed control over public houses throughout its territory, but closer analysis suggests that socio-economic and political interests were …

  • Drinking and Public Space in Early Modern German Lands

    Open Access•Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2005

This paper explores the relationship between drinking and public space in early modern Bavaria (Germany) and Bern (Swiss Confederation). Contemporaries drank alcohol mainly on sociable occasions and in public houses. Due both to mounting demand (greater spatial mobility) and to supply (potentially high income for publicans), the number of establishments increased between 1500 and 1800. Most emerged near markets and thoroughfares. Closer analysis …

  • The Devil's Altar? Crime and the Early Modern Public House

    Open Access•Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•History Compass•2004

Was the early modern public house really such a dangerous place, as Puritan preachers (and many historians) suggested? This article discusses offences by publicans and patrons. It argues that the evidence for crime needs to be carefully contextualised and that taverns could stabilise as well as threaten the social order

Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Modern History•1999•Cited by: 2

This essay examines the significance of inns and taverns in the early modern period. Drawing above all on a series of registers from the French and German lands of the Swiss Republic of Bern, the discussion is presented in two parts. A first section investigates structural aspects such as ownership, clientele, and the remarkably multifunctional character of these establishments. The second part illustrates the continuing growth in provision durin…

  • Late Medieval Churchwardens' Accounts and Parish Government: Looking beyond London and Bristol

    Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This contribution reviews a number of contested issues in the historiography of the late medieval English parish. In contrast to views expressed by Clive Burgess in a recent article in this journal, it is argued that the reliability of churchwardens' accounts cannot be judged in a general manner, but depends on the specific questions historians want answered. While offering reliable insights into ordinary financial transactions made by churchward…

In this article Beat Kümin and Andreas Würgler make a comparative study of how the peoples in early modern England and Hesse used their acknowledged rights to present petitions and grievances to exercise a real influence on the process of legislation, and even over administration in general. They could on occasion, virtually initiate legislation from below. The article illustrates the unusually wide scope and usage of the petition in England, hel…

  • Penitential Bequests and Parish Regimes in Late Medieval England

    Open Access•CLIVE BURGESS, Beat Kümin•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1993•References: 8

The orthodoxy which dismissed the pre-Reformation parish as the point where the many failings of the Church met to blight ordinary lives has exercised a tenacious grip on the historical imagination. Current opinion, on the other hand, perceives the parish as deserving of inquiry, not least because of a dawning realisation that it was a point where managerial expertise and a noteworthy buoyancy of spirit intersected. Ostentatious programmes of chu…

  • Theorien kommunaler Ordnung in Europa

Antony Black, Rosi Fuhrmann et al.•BOOK•Theorien kommunaler Ordnung in…•1996

Peter Blickle, Beat Kümin•BOOK•From the Communal Reformation to…•1998

From the Communal Reformation to the Revolution of the Common Man brings together important studies related to a coherent interpretation of the Reformation and the Peasants War of 1525 as a mass movement, rooted in the structures of the communities of towns and villages. The volume presents both detailed studies from the archives and conceptualized essays.
