Freedom, Democracy and Science
The development of democracy and the development of science are not in a simple causal relationship. Rather, history shows that science can also develop in non-democratic and autocratic societies. Given the production conditions of scientific knowledge, the natural and technical sciences, for example, need well-equipped laboratories and technical equipment. Scientists in many disciplines can only do their work in institutions that provide them wi…
Th/19th-Century Narratives and Translations of Science in the South Asian Islamicate World
The period between 1750 and 1900 was one of major political and cultural transformation in South Asia. Politically, the Mughal Empire had gone into rapid decline, new kingdoms emerged as cultural centers at the periphery of the empire, and as the 19th century commenced, the East India Company became more entrenched in the politics of the subcontinent, preceding the formal inauguration of colonial rule. This chapter examines the processes of the p…
One or many? Genealogies of the mathematical sciences
This essay engages with some of the central arguments presented in the essay by Reviel Netz. The intention is not to disagree with his arguments but to raise an additional set of questions and salient concerns. The first section discusses the importance of an iterative praxis in the transformation of scientific or mathematical concepts within a school or tradition. In a subsequent section, this is linked with the interpretation of classical texts…

The Young P.C. Ray and the Inauguration of the Social History of Science in India (1885-1907)
This paper discusses two projects in the early life of the Indian chemist, P. C. Ray, rightfully considered the founder of the 'school of chemistry' in modern India. Ray scholarship has often considered these years of his life as important from the point of view of an appreciation of the history of alchemy in India, but not in terms of his scientific contributions. It is only after 1907 that the Ray legend became the subject of serious scientific…
The Moral Legitimation of Modern Science
This paper takes up the discussion of a nineteenth-century theory of science — that of biological evolution — among members of the Indian National Council of Education, and in the pages of an important journal called The Dawn, published from Calcutta between 1897 and 1913. It discusses how, toward the turn of the century, science was legitimated as a morally worthy endeavour among the Bengali Bhadralok community. The debate pursued in The Dawn wa…

Ramchandra's Treatise through `The Haze of the Golden Sunset
In 1850, Yesudas Ramchandra published a work entitled A Treatise on the Problems of Maxima and Minima. The inspiration behind the work lay in the nineteenth-century understanding that the Indian tradition of mathematics was essentially algebraic. As part of the task of `revitalization' undertaken by the avant-garde of the Indian intelligentsia, Ramchandra sought to introduce the Indian people to the latest developments in calculus, in their `nati…
