Black Feminist Constellations: Dialogue and Translation across the Americas
A collection of essays, interviews, and conversations by and between scholars, activists, and artists from Latin America and the Caribbean that paints a portrait of Black women's experiences across the region. Black women in Latin America and the Caribbean suffer a triple erasure: as Black people, as women, and as non-English speakers in a global environment dominated by the Anglophone North. Black Feminist Constellations is a passionate and nece…

Urbanization, ruination, and refusal: Racialized geographies in 1920s Rio de Janeiro
This article focuses on a community located in downtown Rio de Janeiro that was destroyed to make way for the commemorations of Brazil's Centenary of Independence in 1922. Morro do Castelo was once a space customarily inhabited by Afro-descendants, but Italian and Portuguese immigrants predominated there by the time of its destruction. I argue that whatever Castelo's racial heterogeneity it was imagined and treated as a black space by planners an…
Deviant Geographies: Black Spaces of Cultural Expression in Early 20th-Century Rio de Janeiro
This article extends the notion of black territories in early 20th-century Rio de Janeiro by discussing the production of more enduring physical sites alongside forms of territoriality that were sometimes created in the moment and were often more short-lived. Performing Race and Gender in Brazil: Karim Ainouz's Madam Satã (2002)
This article focuses on the ways that racialized and gendered identities intersect in Brazil. It considers how the objectification of certain racialized and sexualized bodies became central to the national imaginary, and how Afro-descendant identitarian claims can simultaneously invoke and contest hegemonic representations of racial types. The second half of the article analyzes the performance of race and gender in the 2002 film Madame Satã, in …
Spaces of Remembrance & Representation in the City: Jose Padilha's Onibus 174
