Blaise Pascal and the Theology of Nature
This paper offers a brief analysis of Blaise Pascal’s epistemological interdisciplinary strategy for his apologetic promotion of the Christian message. His proposal is first compared and contrasted with the one defined by Michael Buckley as the “Newtonian Settlement,” and then it is interpreted as a sui generis theology of nature. Finally, a “Pascalian” hermeneutics of some classical issues concerning natural theology and metaphysics in the conte…
How Not to Turn Water Into Wine
In the present paper we revisit and analyze the thought of John Wippel on the topic of the legitimacy or otherwise of a Christian philosophy, a debate which involved some of the towering figures of twentieth-century European philosophy, such as Étienne Gilson, Jacques Maritain, and Fernand Van Steenberghen. Wippel’s Thomistic appraisal of the possibility of a Christian philosophy values the key distinction between the order/moment of discovery an…
A Plea to Thomists
In this paper, we discuss with some contemporary Thomists the possibility of re-actualizing Thomas's fifth way to God in the science-theology dialogue. We start with a reference to Spinoza's critique of teleology in light of some recent Spinoza studies, and after summarizing several Thomistic defenses of Aquinas's teleological argument, we interpret that critique as targeting the fifth way as well. We then focus on Darwin's impact on biological d…
Grounding Intelligibility, Safeguarding Mystery
This paper suggests a "neoclassical" reading of Ernan McMullin's thought on science and theology. McMullin's Augustinian convictions on God and the God-world relation coincide with those of some prominent scholars from two renowned schools of neo-scholastic philosophy of the twentieth century in Louvain and Milan. The school of Milan, thanks to the work of some disciples of its leading figure, Amato Masnovo, developed a neoclassical version of ne…
Stephen Jay Gould and Karl Popper on Science and Religion
This paper analyzes the thought on science and religion of two thinkers that share essentially the same position: Stephen Jay Gould and Karl Popper. We first make a comparison between those passages of their works where this similarity emerges more explicitly. We then recall some of the critiques that have been extended to Gould on this topic; they can be extended to Popper as well. Moreover, we highlight another critical issue—taken from evoluti…
Ernan McMullin’s Thought on Science and Theology
The thought of Ernan McMullin on the relationship between science and theology can be summarized with a word that he himself used: consonance. We briefly describe this epistemological proposal, and we show a concrete instance of its application by way of a short analysis of one of McMullin’s interdisciplinary works, “Cosmic Purpose and the Contingency of Human Evolution.” With the help of the authoritative comment that William Stoeger has made on…
