  • Lead isotopic provenance of some coins and other bronze items from an early Swahili site in Ibo Island (northern Mozambique)

    Open Access•I Montero-Ruiz, Marisa Ruíz-Gálvez et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2025•References: 44

Northern Mozambique has traditionally been considered marginal within the Swahili trade of the western Indian Ocean due to the absence of outstanding harbour stone-built towns. However, our research on Ibo island (Quirimbas Archipelago) proves the role played by small coastal villages in the early development of the Indian Ocean trade route. In this paper, we discuss the result of a lead isotope analysis performed on samples of two coins and some…

Following other experiences regarding the enhancement of Heritage, we present a proposal of trekking and of Archaeotourism itineraries that aims to integrate the Natural and Archaeological Heritage of Oukaïmeden. Other experiences prove that the archaeological tourism has a positive impact in many rural areas, boosting social and economic improvements and new jobs opportunities. The paper describes the itineraries proposed, the methodology develo…

    Open Access•Youssef Bokbot, Marisa Ruíz-Gálvez•ARTICLE•Complutum•2015

Main objectives of the project and principal results of field campaigns are summarized. Our hypothesis was that the valley was occupied not before the Mid Holocene, associated to environmental changes caused by the displacement of the summer monsoon and the onset of more arid conditions. Also that it was the value of bovines as mobile wealth, the reason behind the first summer trips to Oukaïmeden, profiting of snow melting and wet pastures in the…

Open Access•Jorge De Torres Rodríguez, Jorge De Torres et al.•ARTICLE•Complutum•2015•Cited by: 1

Statistical analysis was applied to the study of Oukaïmeden rock art as a way to obtain chronological information. By means of correspondence analysis we identified trends in the representation of the various individual motifs in the valley rock art. Subsequently we analyzed recurrent associations and overlappings, which led us to the last scale of analysis: the dating of rock art stations

  • Ensamblando datos.

Open Access•José María Señorán Martín, Jose María Señorán et al.•ARTICLE•Complutum•2015•Cited by: 1

Geographic Information Systems have become recently a methodological device to analyze the social configuration of historical landscapes. This paper deals with mobility and visibility as basic agents of the landscape organization, which is in turn, one of the theoretical bases of ARPA’s project. Hence, the need of applying these methodological tools to achieve a deeper knowledge of that process. GIS techniques show a direct connection between roc…

  • Conclusiones y nuevas vías de análisis

    Open Access•Marisa Ruíz-Gálvez, Youssef Bokbot et al.•ARTICLE•Complutum•2015

Main conclusions achieved by the ARPA project are discussed in the present paper. Although we do not discard previous sporadic visits, up to now, the oldest evidences of human regular use of the Oukaïmeden valley date back to the Late Neolithic, coinciding with changes in the African Monsoon. Combining archaeology, paleoecological information, 14C, art, and statistics and using GIS tools, we offer an interpretation of the human use of the valley …

    Open Access•Antonio Rubinos, Marisa Ruíz-Gálvez•ARTICLE•Trabajos de Prehistoria•2003•Cited by: 1

  • The Bartered Bride. Goldwork, Inheritance, and Agriculture in the Late Prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula

    Marisa Ruíz-Gálvez, Priego Priego•ARTICLE•Journal of European Archaeology•1994

There are two main periods of agrarian improvement in the Iberian peninsula, the Copper Agel Bronze Age transition and the late Bronze Age/Iron Age transition, associated with the use of the plough, traction, and methods of increasing soil fertility, such as fertilising and the growing of legumes. Both were related to changes in women's inheritance. Improvements in agrarian technology appeared first in south-eastern Spain and their consequences a…

    Open Access•Marisa Ruíz-Gálvez, MARISA RUIZ‐GÁLVEZ•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•1991•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Trade languages are an indispensable mechanism of communication and acculturation in direct and long term trade relationships. In such cases, the aim of this paper is to suggest that Lusitanian, the old Indoeuropean language spoken in West Iberia, arrived in this way from the Atlantic region in the Late Bronze Age, together with technical improvements and a new ideology that deeply influenced the local population, which preserved these cultural f…
