The Myth of the Aesthetic
A History of Western Philosophy of Music
This book presents a comprehensive, accessible survey of Western philosophy of music from Pythagoras to the present. Its narrative traces themes and schools through history, in a sequence of five chapters that survey the ancient, medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary periods. Its wide-ranging coverage includes medieval Islamic thinkers, Continental and analytic thinkers, and neglected female thinkers such as Vernon Lee (Violet Paget). A…

New Objections to Cultural Appropriation in the Arts
Some writers have objected to cultural appropriation in the arts on the grounds that it violates cultures’ property rights. Recently a paper by Erich Matthes and another by C. Thi Nguyen and Matthew Strohl have argued that cultural appropriation does not violate property rights but that it is nevertheless often objectionable. Matthes argues that cultural appropriation contributes to the oppression of disadvantaged cultures. Nguyen and Strohl argu…
Philosophy of Music: A History
A good, single volume history of the philosophy of music would be nice to have, but I do not think that the book under review here is it. (Full disclosure: I am currently in the process of writing a history of the philosophy of music.) For a start, at 169 pages including bibliography and index, it is simply too short to do justice to 2500 years of philosophy of music. Too many important figures are completely missing from Martinelli’s volume. Man…
Jean-Baptiste Du Bos’ Critical Reflections on Poetry and Painting and Hume’s Treatise
It has long been known that Jean-Baptiste Du Bos (and, in particular, his book Critical Reflections on Poetry and Painting) exercised a considerable influence on Hume’s essays and, in particular, on the ‘Of the Standard of Taste’ and ‘Of Tragedy’. It has also been noted that some passages in the Treatise bear marks of Du Bos’ influence. In this essay, we identify many more passages in the Treatise that bear unmistakable signs of Du Bos’ influence…

The Ancient and Modern System of the Arts
Paul Oskar Kristeller famously argued that the modern 'system of the arts' did not emerge until the mid-eighteenth century, in the work of Charles Batteux. On this view, the modern conception of the fine arts had no parallel in the ancient world, the middle-ages or the modern period prior to Batteux. This paper argues that Kristeller was wrong. The ancient conception of the imitative arts completely overlaps with Batteux's fine arts: poetry, pain…
