On Race and Historicism: A Polemic in Three Turns
Responding to recent work on race in early modern studies, this essay urges further scholarship more fully grounded in analysis of the emergence of racial capitalism. At the same time, it acknowledges the limits of the archive and explores the Black aesthetic thought responsive to such limits, namely Fred Moten's adjustments of Theodor Adorno. Inspired in part by the recent study Black Samson, the essay concludes by applying some of its remarks o…

Raison d'état, Religion, and the Body in The Rape of Lucrece
With an emphasis on the religious figuration of its heroine's chaste body, the present essay explores the political dynamics of The Rape of Lucrece. Seeing these qualities allows us to engage the poem's gender dynamics and its politics, with both of these being centered on is…

Poignancy as Human Rights Aesthetic
This essay offers an aesthetic of “poignancy” as a potential theoretical ground of human rights, as opposed to Kantian formulations currently finding expression in the language of “cosmopolitanism.” The lack of concern with health and life found in Immanuel Kant's definition of human freedom is reproduced in what the author calls “magisterial” human rights practice, which tends to emphasize civil proceduralism and is advanced by a global elite. A…
