Religiousness Measured by the Four Basic Dimensions of Religiousness Scale (4-BDRS) among Polish Believers
The Four Basic Dimensions of Religiousness Scale (4-BDRS) was developed within the framework of cross-cultural psychology to measure four universal dimensions of religiousness: believing, bonding, belonging, and behaving. This paper presents the Polish version of the 4-BDRS and reports two studies that examined its measurement quality and the personality and well-being correlates of these dimensions. The scale has demonstrated satisfactory reliab…
How many and what mechanisms are needed to explain self‐regulatory functions in personality dynamics
We propose a model of basic self‐regulatory mechanisms that integrates descriptive‐structural and dynamic‐explanatory approaches to personality. Using a structural way of thinking and based on a structural model of personality (the Circumplex of Personality Metatraits), we deduced two orthogonal (distinct) but interactive mechanisms: (a) Impulse Control responsible for controlling automatically activated impulses, urges, and affective reactions a…
The Importance of Identity Style for the Level of Religiosity in Different Developmental Periods
Identity is built in the context of an individual's professed values, moral principles, and often, religiosity. Adolescence and emerging and early adulthood are times of intensive identity construction and of changes in religious attitudes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterise people across these three developmental periods in terms of the level of their identity and religiosity, and to examine whether particular identity styles a…
Change and Consistency of Self-Esteem in Early and Middle Adolescence in the Context of School Transition
Self-esteem is continuous and has stable characteristics, but it may also change, e.g., during transitions from one educational level to the next. In a prospective cross-sectional study over a year and a half, 250 Polish early adolescents (N = 109, 54 girls; mean age at T1 = 12.68 years, SD = 0.49) and middle adolescents (N = 141, 107 girls; mean age at T1 = 15.80, SD = 0.44) were tested three times using Harter's Self-Perception Profile for Adol…
Personality underpinnings of identity
The article examines the relationships between personality traits and identity formation modes in both a theoretical and empirical manner. The sample consisted of 813 participants aged 18–65. The results indicate that personality metatraits Alpha and Beta can serve as core underpinnings of differentiation in identity formation, and that the relationships between these two personality metatraits and identity formation modes take a sinusoidal form,…
Trajectories of Identity Formation Modes and Their Personality Context in Adolescence
Identity formation is a dynamic process during adolescence. Trajectories of identity formation were assessed longitudinally in early and middle adolescents, taking into account the personality underpinnings of this process. Identity formation was conceptualized according to the circumplex of identity formation modes. The model distinguishes basic modes rooted in Marcia's categories of exploration and commitment. Plasticity and stability, the two …
Circumplex of identity formation modes
The paper presents the Circumplex of Identity Formation Modes, which is designed to integrate the various concepts describing identity formation in the Erikson–Marcia tradition. The theoretical foundations of the model were formulated based on (1) analysis of the definitions of constructs currently used in the literature on identity development, (2) redefinition of exploration and commitment (basic constructs proposed by Marcia to describe identi…
Empirical verification of the circumplex of identity formation modes and its potential to integrate different models of identity development in the Erikson–Marcia tradition
The paper presents the empirical verification of the Circumplex of Identity Formation Modes proposed by Cieciuch and Topolewska (current issue). The model implies eight identity formation modes, characterized as ways of identity management: Exploration, Consolidation, Socialization, Normativity, Petrification, Diffusion, Defiance, and Moratorivity. The proposed model builds a basis for the synthesis of knowledge on identity formation gathered in …
