Introduction to dossier. Debating whiteness in Latin America
The reconfiguration of mestizaje and whiteness in the diaspora
As a light-skinned mestiza Mexican woman, I have enjoyed the privileges of 'whiteness' in Latin America. In this article, I talk about how my whiteness has helped me in the development of my own fieldwork with Latin American migrants in London, that is among other mestizas who have similar understandings of the complexities and contradictions of mestizaje and whiteness in the region. I engage with the literature on white passing to explore the sh…
Home is not what it was
Activists fighting evictions in Madrid develop various social, affective, and material connections with and disconnections from their homes. This is especially important for people who are immersed in a regime of economic austerity and neoliberal housing policies that have provoked the social and material unmaking and remaking of homes. These processes take place and are performed through the making and unmaking of material and affective links th…
The intimacy of the gift in the economy of sex work
This article explores the intersection that exists between the economy and intimacy through an exploration of gift exchanges between Latin American sex workers and regular clients in London. It engages with scholarship on sex work and intimacy to explore the social dimension of gifts embedded in affective commodified relationships. It explores the ways in which gifts create socioeconomic and emotional spheres of speculation that contribute to the…

Doing Anthropology in a Hostile Environment
It was 10 years ago that I conducted fieldwork for my PhD among women from Latin America who worked in domestic and sex work in London when I started seeing glimpses of the hostile environment that pervades not only in Europe but in various corners of the world. Brexit, Trump, Putin, Bolsonaro, Moody, Salvini, the Janjaweed militia in Sudan, the refugee crisis in Europe, the displacement of thousands of Muslim ethnic minorities in Myanmar, and of…
The temporality of illegality
Through an ethnography of undocumented migrants from Latin America to London, I explore the temporality of illegality as a piecemeal process in which migrants find themselves embodying new ways of being in the world. I investigate the power of illegality beyond its legal connotations and through the analysis of the everyday experiences of migrants in London, I show how it affects the external structure of migrants' worlds, as well as their subjec…
