Interethnic dynamics and ethnic identification process an example from the Southern Shan State, Burma (Myanmar)
The essay addresses the issue of which cultural tools are used in order to index particular ethnic identifications within an interethnic environment. It is analysed how the Inle Lake region has undergone a symbolic restructuring of its socio-cultural network since the end of the 1950s. We shall first address the issue of how the interethnic dynamics was renegotiated after the waning of the Shan political sway upon the region and how the Intha eme…
Ethnodiachrony, Buddhism, and ethnicity
The paper focuses on how ethnicity is constructed and negotiated as well as on how it surfaces through language convergence. The paper aims to demonstrate that, in the very specific Khmer case, dialect convergences cannot be explained through an exclusive internal analysis of the linguistic system that would dismiss the comprehension of the anthropological environment. It is shown that external anthropological factors bound to ethnicity are to be…
Brāhmaṇa" as an honorific in "Indianized" mainland Southeast Asia
This article aims at demonstrating that the Old Khmerb/vraḥoriginates from a syllabic depletion of the Sanskrit wordbrāhmaṇathrough a monosyllabization process, a widespread diachronic phenomenon among the Mon-Khmer languages of Mainland Southeast Asia. The paper will also show that this term must have been originally used as an honorific for deities and, consequently, for royalty. It therefore respectfully disagrees with two other current hypoth…
A semiotic approach to ‘ethnicity’. An example from Taiwanese ‘Chineseness
For a few decades, socio-cultural as well as linguistic anthropologists have worked hard to construct a reliable semiotic paradigm to study linguistic, cultural and social interactions. These subfields – linguistic, cultural and social – are often analytically tackled asunder, though they are intimately interconnected, intertwined and overlapping. The semiotic theory of culture is not a novel discovery in itself, but it can also be applied to the…
Towards a Panchronic Perspective on a Diachronic Issue
This paper aims at introducing the panchronic perspective by solving a specific problem of historical linguistics in Burmese, namely the phonetic value of the rhyme in Old Burmese. Its purpose is to demonstrate that a diachronic account is not exclusively indicative of system internal contingencies, but also a medium through which socio-cultural situations of the past surface. As such, I will argue that internal (systemic) as well as external (so…
Localvs.Trans-regional Perspectives on Southeast Asian 'Indianness
This article is an attempt to define the concept ‘(Southeast Asian) Indianness’ through a comparative approach based on a local vs. trans-regional perspective. I shall analyse the complex relationships that develop between a translocal, urban and literate Indo-Aryan Great Tradition and a local, rural and oral Little Tradition. First, I shall tackle the question of whether literacy has any socio-religious relevance and endeavour to identify its re…
