    Open Access•Jean Chaline, Jean-Pierre Chaline•ARTICLE•Memoria y Civilización•2018

  • Missing Records and Depositional Breaks in French Late Pleistocene Cave Sediments

    Open Access•Michel Campy, Jean Chaline•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

Cave entrance and rock shelter infillings are positioned within the Pleistocene chronology for three areas of France (northern Alps, Franche-Comté, and Périgord). Despite minor local variations, it is possible to identify regional types with a consistent depositional record over long intervals of time. The interregional variability relates to the frequency and position of the gaps within the infillings. Sites in the northern Alps have not yielded…

The physical dating of the Gigny speleothem by the uranium/thorium method (145.000 years + 18.000 — 45.000) and by Electron spin resonance (145.000 years + 66.000 — 45.000) are very coherent. They suggest that the deposition of the speleothem of the Gigny interglacial occured either during an intrarissian interglacial phase (Kàrlich-Elbeuf II-Treenian interglacial) or at the beginning of Eemian

  • Les Rongeurs. Leurs significations paléoécologiques et paléoclimatiques

Jean Chaline, Germain Brochet•ARTICLE•Gallia préhistoire Suppléments•1989

The Gigny rodents sequence in the 44 levels allowed us to analyze the climatic evolution and to attempt a first reconstruction of quantitative paleoclimatology by the Hokr ponderate method. The rodent sequence calibrated by physical methods leads to a coherent chronoclimatic scheme well integrated in the European one. Three new climatic phases are described : Suran stadium, Cressia interglacial, Loisia interstadial, and the Grande Pile sequence i…

  • Chapitre VI – La séquence chronoclimatique

Michel Campy, Jean Chaline et al.•ARTICLE•Gallia préhistoire Suppléments•1989

The filling of the porch of the cave of the Baume in Gigny shows a stratigraphie sequence which spreads from the middle Pleistocene to present times. Five important chronoclimatic periods are clearly defined from biostratigraphic and sedimentological data, respectively : Suran stadial, Cressia interglacial, Gigny 1 stadial, Saint-Julien interstadial, Gigny 2 stadial, Loisia interstadial and Gigny 3 stadial. However, numerous gaps may be pointed o…

The Middle Terrace at Amiens-St-Acheul and Avre valley is important. Firstly it is the type-site of the Middle Acheulean of St-Acheul ; it also shows up some of the climatic complexity of the late Mindel period. As Commont and Breuil suggested, it can probably be correlated with the Middle Terrace of South-East England which contains the famous Swanscombe site. The Middle Terrace of the Somme contains three units, placed in superposition. These a…
