Six authors in search of justice: Engaging with political transitions
In 2012 Michael Newman sat down to write an academic study of transitional justice. That involved an assessment of judicial and non-judicial measures that may be taken to address legacies of human rights abuses in countries moving from repressive regimes to more democratic societies. These measures may involve different mixes of retribution, criminal procedures, projects of memory and recognition and reconciliation. The mix depends on the history…
Depletion: The Cost of Social Reproduction
In this article we explore the concept of depletion through social reproduction (DSR). We describe depletion, identify its key indicators and suggest different methodologies that could be used to measure it. We discuss issues having to do with gendered harm as well as questions about how depletion might be reversed. We conclude that recognizing DSR in this way can be a powerful tool for understanding the consequences of non-recognition of the val…
Disability Discrimination by Association: A Case of the Double Yes
In July 2008, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in Coleman v Attridge Law (Case C-303/06) that the European prohibition of discrimination based on disabilities (Directive 2000/78) applies when the direct victim of discrimination is a person associated with the disabled person, such as a parent who is the primary carer for a disabled child. This decision has major implications for the scope and application of European anti-discrimination l…
Governing the EU: Gender and Macroeconomics
The European Union (EU) predates and prefigures debates about global governance. The post-war decision to create an economic union between previously warring states, strong enough both to restrain hostile intent and build prosperity, involved innovative macroeconomic thinking. The resulting union has developed many of the features at regional level, which are now seen as characterizing global governance. In particular, it operates through a wides…
Recasting the Global Political Economy: Counting Women's Unpaid Work
The article reports on the factors which lead to the depletion of the capacities and resources for social reproduction. The author defines the factor as the one that keeps households and societies active. Specifically, the factor being cited is the unpaid work of women at home and in the community. However, the globalization of production, the move of women into unpaid work, as well as the commercialization of services among other reasons occurri…

Gender issues in international relations: The case of the European Community
This article takes a concern with gender as the starting point for looking at some of the political processes and structures that have grown up within the European Community. Such an approach reveals new contours to the EC system and throws a fresh light on features hitherto regarded as ‘normal’. Though the focus is on the EC, it is argued that the results of an analysis of this kind have a wider significance. Thus the article is intended as a co…

The European Women's Lobby
The European Women's Lobby was formally set up at a meeting in Brussels on 21-22 September 1990. The aim of the Lobby is to establish a permanent representation for women at the level of the European Community (EC). Women are represented in the Lobby via delegates from nongovernmental women's organizations, or co-ordinations of women's organizations, which are operating at either the European or the national level. The existence of the Lobby, the…
The European Community Directive on Equal Treatment in Social Security
The European Community Directiveon equal treatment in social security was adopted by the Council of Ministers in December 1978. This article focuses on three related issues: first, the objectives and characteristics of the Directive and whether these have been modified or clarified over time; secondly, the involvement of women in the adoption and application of the Directive and, conversely, the role of the Directive in mobilising women and encou…

Women and European Politics: Contemporary Feminism and Public Policy
Book synopsis: Women and European Politics is a comprehensive country-by-country survey of the changing political and economic history of women in Eastern and Western Europe over the last two centuries. Joni Lovenduski discusses the contributions of the first wave feminists who fought for women suffrage as well as for reforms in family life, wage work, and educational opportunities. A more economically independent group of second wave feminists w…

Teaching International Organization
It is comparatively rare for academics to get together to discuss problems connected with teaching. A lively discussion however developed out of an ad hoc meeting at the 1978 BISA conference on the teaching of courses which could be loosely subsumed under the title of ‘International Organization’ (IO). The discussion made clear that this area of International Relations teaching is in a state of flux, and that considerable uncertainty exists both …

Sources for a Study of the Congo since Independence
Before 1960 there was little general interest in the Belgian Congo, and the published material available on any aspect of its development was extremely limited. The accession of the Congo to independence in July 1960 and the prolonged crisis which followed has, however, completely altered this situation, and in the last three years more books and articles have been published on the Congo than on any other country in Africa. The purpose of this ar…

This conference was sponsored by the British Anti-Apartheid Movement (founded in 1960 after the Sharpeville massacre) and the convenor was Ronald Segal, now editor of the Penguin African Library. The conference chairman was Mongi Slim,…
