How Ready Is Higher Education Faculty for Engaged Student Learning? Applying Transtheoretical Model to Measure Service-Learning Beliefs and Adoption
This study examined service-learning (SL) beliefs and participation among faculty in different stages of involvement to develop tailored resources and support. A representative sample of 1,200 faculty members at a major public university in Southeast United States was recruited. The study used the transtheoretical model (TTM) as an innovative way to group SL involvement into five stages: unaware (U), pre-contemplation (PC), contemplation (C), pre…
Changing Pedagogy
This study conducted inductive analyses on faculty motivations, barriers, and strategies for service-learning (SL) adoption in a major public research university in the Southeast United States. Data found faculty members with prior SL experience were often motivated by intrinsic personal values, yet external barriers need to be addressed to increase morale. An overwhelming lack of recognition and rewards was perceived, despite the institutional p…
HIV-related behaviors among black students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) versus white students attending a traditionally white institution (TWI)
Recent data indicated the unexpected movement of the HIV epidemic in the Southeastern US and the transmission among college students especially in black campuses. The current study is the first one attempted to assess and compare HIV-related behaviors among black students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and white students attending a traditionally white institution (TWI). Black students were recruited from HBCUs (n=…
Factors Associated with Intentions for Colorectal Cancer Screenings in a Chinese Sample
This study investigated factors associated with intention to screen for colorectal cancer among Chinese people age 40 yr. and older. In-depth individual interviews were conducted. Participants were recruited from urban middle-class communities in Taichung, Taiwan through homogeneous, criterion, and snowball sampling strategies (N=32). Immersion and crystallization techniques were used in data analysis. Member check was used to ensure data quality…
Experience of Colorectal Cancer Screening Using a Home-Administered Kit for Fecal Occult Blood Tests among a Chinese Worksite Population in Taiwan
This study examined the experience of fecal occult blood test (FOBT) using a home-administered kit that requires no stool handling for colorectal cancer screening among Chinese people age 40 and older. 304 participants were recruited from 10 worksites in Taiwan. Both oral and written instructions on how to use the test kit were provided. After participants completed the screening test, their experiences were documented through structured open-end…
Correlates of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Women in Taiwan
In this study we examine several theory-based psychosocial factors on cervical cancer screening among Chinese women in Taiwan (N = 125). The reliabilities of the scales showed good internal consistence (Chronbach alpha ranged from 0.68 to 0.88). We found that 30% of the women had never received a Papanicolaou (Pap) test, and only 58% reported a screening in the past 3 years (adherent). Intention to have a Pap test in the coming year was higher am…
