  • Gesunder Sex im Mittelalter

    Open Access•Peter Dinzelbacher•ARTICLE•VIRUS - Beiträge zur Sozialgeschich…•2020

Medieval sexuality was restricted by the Catholic Churchâ s norms, which allowed a legally married couple to have intercourse only in order to procreate and only during a few weeks of the year. Even this legal sex was considered by many theologians to be sinful. Notwithstanding the above, the medical texts of the epoch, based mostly on antique surgery (transmitted in part via Arabic writers) quite often treated questions of healthy sex according …

  • Renate Blumenfeld-Kosinski. The Strange Case of Ermine de Reims: A Medieval Woman between Demons and Saints

    Peter Dinzelbacher•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2017

Who was Ermine of Reims (d. 1396)? She was one of the nearly uncountable female visionaries of the late Middle Ages, haunted by continuous demonic attacks, but receiving only a few celestial apparitions. She was known before 1997 only via several mentions in Jean Gerson’s writings. In that year, Claude Arnaud-Gillet published the critical edition of her confessor’s dossier, which contains not all but many of her mostly terrifying religious experi…

This volume provides a contemporary overview of texts, images, phenomena and personalities of Christian mysticism during the Western Middle Ages. The material is primarily approached from literary, history of mentality and psychology of religion perspectives. Basic knowledge is communicated through critical analysis and is also made accessible through a glossary. Although this work clearly focuses on German mysticism, developments in other Europe…

  • Mysticism and Nature: Zur Geschichte ihres Verhältnisses vom Altertum bis zur Gegenwart

    Peter Dinzelbacher•BOOK•Mystik und natur•2009

Nowadays there is a tension between science and religion which is scarcely capable of resolution. This has a long tradition, going back to Antiquity and the Middle Ages - as too does its counterpart, the integrative world-view in which knowing the forces of nature and recognising God are essential human tasks. The first volume of the new series Theophrastus-Paracelsus-Studies concerns itself with epochs and personalities in the history of ideas f…

  • Kritische Bemerkungen zur Geschichte der religiösen Toleranz und zur Tradition der Lessing'schen Ringparabel

    Peter Dinzelbacher•ARTICLE•Numen•2008

Although the medieval tradition of the famous parable which stands in the centre of Lessing's Nathan der Weise is quite well known, the present writer holds that the older versions of this motive are usually misinterpreted, being habitually read in the light of the German poet's text written during the age of enlightenment. An analysis, however, of the original stories of Etienne de Bourbon, Busone, Boccaccio et al., shows that their real aim was…

  • The Way to the Other World in Medieval Literature and Art

    Peter Dinzelbacher•ARTICLE•Folklore•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 1

JUDGING by the sources, medieval man must have spent much time with thoughts, fears and hopes concerning the Other World. That there was a life to come was a conviction left nearly unchallenged during the Age of Faith. The speculations on the how and where of this afterlife show a marked difference when compared to those of most Christians nowadays: they are markedly concrete, realistic, palpable. The places, receptacula, of the other world were …
