  • Testing the Interpretability Hypothesis

Open Access•Ehsan Solaimani, Florence Myles et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2023•References: 5

Many studies have explored the second language (L2) acquisition of relative clauses (RCs) and whether L2 speakers transfer a resumptive strategy from first language (L1) to L2. While evidence seems to suggest that there are significant L1–L2 differences in the processing of RCs, relatively little is known about the source of non-target-like L2 behaviour. The present study investigates the grammatical acceptability of different RC types in L2 Engl…

  • Spanish Imperfect revisited

    Open Access•Laura Dominguez, María J Arche et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 8

This study investigates the acquisition of the Spanish Imperfect by 60 English learners of Spanish at three different proficiency levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Two oral production tasks and one interpretation task show that although the Imperfect is used from early on, the full array of interpretations associated with this form (habitual, continuous and progressive) is not completely acquired even at advanced levels. Learners acce…

  • The development of theories of second language acquisition

    Open Access•Florence Myles•ARTICLE•Language Teaching•2010•References: 6

Second language acquisition (SLA) is a relatively new field of enquiry. Before the late 1960s, educators did write about L2 learning, but very much as an adjunct of language teaching pedagogy, underpinned by behaviourism, the then-dominant learning theory in psychology. In this view, the task facing learners of foreign languages was to rote-learn and practise the grammatical patterns and vocabulary of the language to be learnt, in order to form n…

  • Language study in higher education and the development of criticality 1

Open Access•Christopher Brumfit, Florence Myles et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2005•Cited by: 4

This article explores the development of criticality in Modern Languages graduates in the UK. It is based on a larger research project investigating the development of criticality in (initially) two academic disciplines through the detailed analysis of a large corpus of qualitative data. This includes student interviews, teacher interviews, classroom observation, written and oral work produced by students, documentation produced for courses, and …

  • Interlanguage corpora and second language acquisition research

    Open Access•Florence Myles•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2005•Cited by: 9•References: 4

This article presents a selective review of the work carried out recently in second language acquisition (SLA) research which makes use of oral learner corpora and computer technologies. In the first part, the reasons why the field of SLA needs corpora for addressing current theoretical issues are briefly reviewed. In the second part, recent literature on corpora and SLA is presented, as well as corpora currently available. The final part of the …

  • Rote or Rule? Exploring the Role of Formulaic Language in Classroom ForeignLanguage Learning

Open Access•Florence Myles, Janet Hooper et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1998•Cited by: 21

This article investigates the role in learning of rote-learned formulas orchunks. We examined data from a longitudinal study of 16 child beginner classroom learners ofFrench for occurrences of three chunks, against which we first tried out definitional criteria. Wethen tracked these forms for 2 years to chart their breakdown and explore their contribution tothe development of a creative language capacity. Our data showed that most of the learners…

  • Interaction between linguistic theory and language processing in SLA

    Open Access•Florence Myles•ARTICLE•Second language Research•1995•Cited by: 7•References: 5

This article examines L2 performance in three areas of French morphosyntax by English L1 learners. More particularly, it examines how coindexation as defined within the government-binding framework develops in the L2 grammar. Empirical studies relating the development of two areas of French grammar by English L1 speakers are presented. L2 performance on information questions involving qui and que in which learners have to link the wh-phrase and i…
