What frames continuity and discontinuity of religion in families? A mixed-methods study of Finnish families in international comparison
Religious agency as a lens on transforming religious socialization in Finnish families
Although rarely defined, religious agency is considered pertinent for investigating how religion transforms as a result of agency-structure interplay. This study contributes to these discussions, employing religious agency as a lens to examine how family members negotiate religious socialization in a secularizing Finland. The analysis of 17 family interviews demonstrated that individuals exercise religious agency in both their negotiation of indi…
Safety and Closeness in Religious Socialization: A Mixed Methods Study of Finnish Families
In this study, we analyze how do safety and closeness, or the lack of them, affect religious socialization in Finnish families. Our empirical data consist of family interviews and a large survey data. As a result, three key dimensions were found: 1) the atmosphere in families, 2) the atmosphere related to religious communities, and 3) the atmosphere related to one’s own spirituality. Our study suggests several implications both for practice in re…
Preserving and transforming the ritual: The question of online Communion in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland
In this article, we analyse how Communion as a religious ritual is perceived in rapidly changing circumstances. As a case study, we examine the views of Finnish Lutheran ministers and parishioners regarding online Communion and use empirical data (N = 333) collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of focusing on the pandemic period per se, we treat Communion as a religious ritual that is under renegotiation during a time of change. We ask w…
Sacrament of (Be)longing’: Analysis of Finnish Lutheran and Orthodox Christian Eucharistic Practices amid Absence and Estrangement
This article addresses eucharistic and communal transformations of two local Finnish churches, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland ( ELCF ) and the Orthodox Church of Finland ( OCF ), amid the COVID -19 pandemic and precautions. We analyze how eucharistic practices have transformed in the ELCF and the OCF and the ways these transformations are reflected in the experiences of both parishioners and pastors. The data consist of four questionn…
Same-Sex Marriage, Toleration, and the Clergy of the Finnish Lutheran Church
In this study, I clarify what kind of attitudes the clergy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland (ELCF) have towards same-sex marriage and how they treat people who disagree with them. The empirical research material consists of 534 answers from Finnish clergy. The ELCF has rejected same-sex marriages, while in all other Nordic countries, the Lutheran churches are marrying same-sex couples. However, over half of the Finnish Lutheran clerg…
Contemporary and Traditional Voices: Reactions to Same-Sex Marriage Legislation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and the Orthodox Church of Finland
This article studies the debate on same-sex marriage in the early 21st century, within the two national churches of Finland, the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Orthodox Church. Legislation facilitating the so-called “gender-neutral marriage” came into effect in Finland in March 2017. In their official teachings, both churches emphasize marriage as a union between a man and a woman. An awareness of the rights of sexual minorities has, however…
