Psychological consequences of school mobile phone bans
Evidence on the psychological effects of mobile phone bans policies in schools remains limited. This study estimated the effect of a mobile phone ban policy on adolescents’ 1) psychological distress and 2) mood. We conducted a secondary analysis of a natural experiment using an emulated trial framework to examine the effects of a mobile phone ban implemented in Australian schools in 2023 (n = 1062). The exposure was a school-wide mobile phone ban…
Student perspectives on banning mobile phones in South Australian secondary schools
There has been a global trend to ban mobile phones in schools, with the aim of reducing distraction, improving focus on learning, and increasing prosocial behaviour. Survey evidence suggests tentatively that bans may increase academic performance and reduce bullying. However, an understudied but important aspect of understanding the impact of phone bans is students' personal views on, and experiences of, these policies. To address this gap, this …
Predicting adolescent disordered eating and behaviours
BACKGROUND: Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the risk of developing disordered eating, with twin studies demonstrating environmental factors moderate genetic susceptibility. To date, gene-environment interactions leveraging polygenic risk scores (PRS) have not been studied in disordered eating phenotypes beyond anorexia nervosa (AN). This study investigated if polygenic risk for AN interacts with established environmental eati…
Social Media Use and Mental Health of Adolescents
People at-risk of an Eating Disorder are more likely to endorse dietary misinformation claims and hold rigid beliefs
People are exposed to misinformation about dieting practices every day on social media which can influence their health and wellbeing. While misinformation research has largely focused on general vulnerabilities to misinformation and strategies to counteract its spread, limited work has examined how specific harmful content, such as dietary misinformation, influences vulnerable groups, particularly those at risk of eating disorders (EDs). This st…

Assessing the validity and responsiveness of a generic preference quality of life measure in the context of posttraumatic stress disorder
Our findings demonstrate that the AQoL-8D has good construct validity but present preliminary evidence that economic evaluations using only GPQoL measures may not fully capture the effectiveness of PTSD treatments
Social media, body image, and the question of causation
A realist synthesis of websites containing content on perfectionism
While most websites contained empirically supported information, the quality needs to improve, and further information needs to be provided on the links with anxiety and depression. Interventions for perfectionism need to have more focus on helping young people develop support networks
Perfectionism and selective attention predict dysmorphic concern in an Australian university population
ObjectiveThere is a paucity of research investigating the underlying aetiological mechanisms contributing to dysmorphic concern. In the present study, we used a multidimensional measure of perfectionism and a dot‐probe task, borrowed from the dysmorphic concern and body dysmorphic disorder literature, to assess associations between subtypes of perfectionism (i.e., concerns and strivings), selective attention towards target word stimuli (i.e., DC‐…
A longitudinal study of midage women with indicators of disordered eating
This longitudinal study of midage women has two main aims: to examine the effect of disordered eating (DE) on quality of life (QoL) among women, including a comparison with a younger cohort and to investigate the mediating roles of both depressive symptoms and social support on the longitudinal relationship between DE and QoL as potential mechanisms of action. We used self-report data from six waves of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's…

Perfectionism as a transdiagnostic process
Genetic Influences on Eating and the Eating Disorders
The current chapter reviews our progress in understanding how genes influence eating and eating disorders (EDs) by addressing the following areas: (1) how recognition of genetic influences on eating and EDs emerged; (2) the complex nature of genetic action; (3) what twin studies can tell us about genetic influences; and (4) the current state of linkage and association studies. It is concluded that genes are an important part of the explanatory fr…
The psychosocial concerns and needs of women recently diagnosed with breast cancer
Objective To qualitatively identify the concerns and needs of Australian women recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Background Breast cancer diagnosis can lead to impairment in multiple areas of psychosocial well‐being, including physical, social and emotional functioning. Research has therefore begun to focus on identifying and addressing survivors’ concerns and needs, with most research examining the time of treatment completion. However diag…
Shared Temperament Risk Factors for Anorexia Nervosa
OBJECTIVE: To answer two questions about the nature of the relationship between anorexia nervosa (AN) and dimensional temperament traits: Which traits are comorbid with AN? Which traits share transmitted liabilities with AN? METHODS: A community sample of 1002 same-gender female twins was selected with respect to participation in two earlier waves of data collection. Measures of eating disorder diagnoses and features were ascertained through inte…
Longitudinal Risk Factors for Adverse Psychological Functioning Six Months after Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery
This research aimed to identify modifiable risk factors for poor psychological functioning six months post-operatively, using a chronic illness model to explain the relationships between risk factors. Consecutive elective CABG patients ( N = 119) completed self-report measures including optimism, illness representations, self-rated health, social support, coping methods, depression, anxiety and PTSD symptomatology in a repeated measures design. P…
The prevalence of cannabis use in an Australian tertiary student population
This study investigated the prevalence of cannabis use among a sample of 448 South Australian tertiary students. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire assessing their history of cannabis use to determine frequency and duration of use. It was found that while 36.4% of the respondents had never used cannabis, 11.4% of the sample reported using cannabis on a weekly basis, while 7.1% were classified as regular long-term cannabis users, w…
