Reconstruction, the Comparative Method, and the Proto-Language Uniformity Assumption
The chief views requiring the Assumption’ of proto-language uniformity are evaluated. The conclusion is reached that the ‘assumption’ can usefully be replaced by (1) a hypothesis regarding the relation of the reconstructed phonemic system to that of some occurrent idiolect, and (2) an assumption regarding the interrelevance of non-irreconcilable reconstructions. Language Divergence and Estimated Word Retention Rate
Preliminary estimates of language divergence and word retention have been obtained by means of a log log transform from data consisting of the determinations of cognations in the lexicostatistical lists of Austronesian languages. Corrections have been obtained to the preliminary estimates by a maximum likelihood estimation method which assigns appropriate scores to represent the weight of evidence contributed by each determination of cognation

In an article entitled Dempwolff's *R (Lg. 29.359–366), I referred (362 f.) to a difference between Dempwolff and myself in the interpretation of the Ngaju-Dayak material which he assigns to a posited ‘alte Sprachschicht’. What was there characterized as a difference in interpretation can now be shown to involve a fundamental procedure in the application of the comparative method. Trukese is a Malayo-Polynesian language spoken by about 10,000 inhabitants of the islands of the Truk lagoon and by a few thousands more in the Hall Islands to the north and in the Mortlock Islands to the south.
