  • A note on synthethic cohort estimates of average desired family size

    G Rodríguez, T James Trussell•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1981

This note considers the problem of estimating average desired family size from parity-specific data on proportions wanting another child. Three procedures proposed in the literature are reviewed and shown to give seriously biased estimates, when women implement their fertility preferences. An alternative procedure is proposed which overcomes most of the deficiencies of previous methods. An example from Sri Lanka illustrates the fact that the diff…

  • Fertility and mortality estimation from the Panama Retrospective Demographic Survey, 1976

    T James Trussell, K Hill•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1980•References: 8

Data from the Retrospective Demographic Survey of Panama offer a unique opportunity to test a wide range of methods for estimating indirectly basic demographic parameters from inaccurate and incomplete data. Our primary emphasis is to evaluate methods for estimating adult mortality from information on widowhood and orphanhood, though estimates of childhood mortality obtained from information on sibling and child survivorship are assessed as well.…

  • Technical Note

    Ansley J Coale, T James Trussell•ARTICLE•Population Index•1978

The model of marital fertility first proposed by Coale (1971) has proved to be a powerful analytical tool. It has been shown to be a useful component of a full model of age-specific fertility rates (Coale and Trussell 1974) and has been employed in several procedures for estimating fertility (Coale et al. 1975) and mortality (Trussell 1975; Hill and Trussell 1977) from inaccurate and incomplete data. This model has also proved to be a useful desc…

  • A Reassessment of the Demography of Traditional Rural China

    George W Barclay, Ansley J Coale et al.•ARTICLE•Population Index•1976

An analysis of the composition, characteristics, and vital processes of the population of rural mainland China was undertaken using data collected as part of a study of land utilization carried out by Naking University in 1929-1931. These data have been reappraised using techniques for demographic analysis of faulty data which shows a consistent picture of the Chinese farmer of high morta moderate fertility, and early and universal marriage. Esti…

  • Efficacy information in contraceptive counseling

T James Trussell, Ruth Faden et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1976•References: 7

Various procedures for estimating the effectiveness of a method of contraception have been devised. These measures, in turn, have been used in populations which differ widely in their propensity to use contraceptives properly. Therefore, a wide array of failure rates is available in the family planning literature. Unfortunately, because of differences in measurement and in choice of population, a random selection of these reported failure rates w…

  • A refined estimator of measures of location of the age at first marriage

    Open Access•T James Trussell•ARTICLE•Demography•1976•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Because of bias of unknown sign and extent introduced by age misreporting when calculating the singulate mean age of marriage in the usual manner, Van de Walle has suggested a fairly robust estimator based on stable population structure. Unfortunately not much is known about the properties of this estimator. Various demographers have argued informally that it indeed estimates the SMAM; others feel that it instead estimates the mean age of marriag…

  • A re-estimation of the multiplying factors for the Brass technique for determining childhood survivorship rates

    T James Trussell•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1975•Cited by: 25•References: 6

One of the truly significant contributions to practical demography is the procedure developed by William Brass for estimating life-table values from minimal data obtained in fertility surveys. Specifically, Brass designed a set of factors dependent on the shape of the fertility schedule, which convert proportions of children dead of women in standard age intervals into life table q(x)-values. Jeremiah Sullivan recently presented in this journal a…

  • Cost versus effectiveness of different birth control methods

    T James Trussell•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1974•References: 7

This paper is an empirical investigation of the mix of birth control methods that would be, allocationally efficient in a real population. Current British resource cost and effectiveness data for each method are presented in order to test the prevalent opinion that expenditure on abortion is allocationally inefficient. Even when abortion resources are valued to give a conservatively high cost, however, this opinion is not upheld. When both quanti…
