Lockdown Friend
During the pandemic, confronted with the "crisolation" (Podjed, 2024) of the first lockdown, I turned like many others to Skype, Zoom, and Teams to connect with distant relatives, friends, and interlocutors (Podjed, 2021; Svašek, 2022). Experimenting with various modes of digital hanging out, I began to paint the computer-mediated interactions (Svašek, 2023a, 2023b). The paintings explored the online relationality of pandemic life and were realiz…
Ethnography as creative improvisation
This article discusses the possibilities and limitations of digital creative methods developed by the author in response to lockdown and social distancing regulations. Building on prepandemic research, the analysis focuses on remote fieldwork in 2020 and 2021 with a small number of migrant women who live in Northern Ireland. It zooms in on three interlocutors and shows how long-distance painting, online walking interviews, and photo diaries have …
Pandemic times
A week before the lockdown I have to stay at home my head still full of touch and smell and bodies to be drawn a paper world some time to think and sketch and chew some bones what is this dread this sound? this choke? this white? this black? this smoke? her rattling breath blows lukewarm air we hold on cheek to cheek she slips and flies her flesh a thing and soon there is no more no car no train no bus no plane I have to find a way * a brush near…
Postsocialism
In many parts of post-socialist Europe the tumultuous political and economic developments have generated strong emotions, ranging from hope and euphoria to disappointment, envy, disillusionment, sorrow, loneliness, and hatred. Yet these aspects have been largely neglected in analyses of the profound transformations that have taken place in Central and Eastern Europe since 1990. Based on a wide variety of ethnographic case studies focusing on Russ…
Under the Skin
Under the Skin is a play that explores art production in state-socialist Czechoslovakia during the normalization period. It investigates the slippery meaning of the word politics in relation to totalitarianism and performance art, and discusses how internalized taken-for-granted social rules can be made evident through artistic inquiry. The script offers insights into the improvisational nature of fieldwork, and invites producers and consumers o…
The Autobiographical Narrative Interview
This chapter critically explores the autobiographical narrative method developed by German sociologist Fritz Schutze. Schutze’s biographical method, used in the analysis in this chapter, provides clearly defined instructions regarding the autobiographical storytelling process. This chapter focuses on self-narratives by two migrant women, conducted as part of a large research project on identity formation in Europe, who at the time of the intervie…

Emotions and Human Mobility
On the Move
The introduction to this special issue of JEMS discusses some of the major developments in the study of emotions, and suggests ways in which various theories and perspectives can be relevant to the study of migration, in particular to the study of social interaction between migrants and members of local communities and to the study of interaction within transnational families. The paper addresses a series of questions. What are emotions? How are …
Who Cares? Families and Feelings in Movement
This paper explores the emotional dimensions of human mobility and transnational family life. The author argues that while feelings of non-belonging are part and parcel of human nature and thus not restricted to migrants, experiences of loss and homelessness can be directly caused by migrant-specific predicaments. After a discussion of some of the recent debates around transnationalism and emotions, and an introduction of the major themes that li…
Passions and Powers
We thank Thomas Wilson and Jonathan Hill for their useful comments on an earlier version of this introduction. Notes 1. In the field of sociology, for example, the American Sociological Association has a section on emotions, the British Sociological Association has a study group on emotions, and the European Sociological Association hosts a research network on emotions. Anthropologists are no less institutionally committed to the study of emotion…

Contacts
This article analyses the strategic manipulation and use of contacts by artists and art historians in state-socialist Czechoslovakia, and focuses on the role of friendship, political favours, professional nepotism and bribery in this process. It criticises Howard Becker's belief that totalitarian regimes cannot partake in discourses of patronage common to Western democracies because of the lack of freedom of individuals. Instead, it argues that t…

The Politics of Artistic Identity
Since the Czech 'revivalist' movement of the last century, Czech art – along with the roles assigned to its artists – has been undergoing a continual process of definition and redefinition. The question of what constituted and what should constitute Czech artistic identity has often proved politically charged, with artists and art historians on opposing sides attacking each other for their political views. More often than not, debates on the issu…
