  • Fear of the Future

    Thomas F Connolly•ARTICLE•World Futures•2025

This essay addresses conspiracism using an interdisciplinary futures studies approach. Conspiracy theories can be reframed, rather than dismissed, via Causal Layered Analysis (CLA) and narrative foresight. After the historical roots of conspiracy theory are traced, narratives that support conspiracies are discussed, and cognitive biases like the conjunction fallacy are examined. • Mad Dogs are Englishmen? Imperialism and Homicide in Somerset Maugham’s “The Outstation”

    Thomas F Connolly•ARTICLE•English Studies•2024•Referências: 5

In Maugham's short story "The Outstation", Warburton, the Resident in a remote sector of Borneo reifies Anderson's imagined community. Warburton is lord of the realm but has an encompassing lack of self-awareness complemented by superhuman self-control. Maugham's story is a dense web of class and race conflict. The protagonist, Warburton, and the antagonist, Cooper, his lower-class assistant, are locked in a struggle that chisels away the façade …

  • Breaking Bad, Dostoevsky, Nihilism, and Marketplace Morality

    Thomas F Connolly•ARTICLE•The European Legacy•2023•Referências: 6

From the perspective of the television series Breaking Bad (2008–2013), Walter White, its antihero, is not just an “angry middle-aged white guy”. He represents the repressed rage of countless ill-used Ph.Ds. This is why “he is the danger.” The cultural moment of Breaking Bad may serve for us in Siegfried Kracauer’s term as a “close-up shot or establishing shot.” The series is an index of Kracauer’s “law of levels.” White has lived his life accord…

  • William Saroyan’s The Human Comedy and MGM’s vanished American pastoral

Thomas F Connolly•ARTICLE•Journal of Adaptation in Film &…•2022

William Saroyan’s novel The Human Comedy () may be the first significant American novel adapted from a screenplay. The author had been contracted to create a film for MGM, but with representative Hollywood chicanery, Saroyan was done out of his manuscript and had to settle for a mere ‘from the story by’ credit. No film crystallizes the MGM vision of America while implying the promises of readjustment to come when the war is over more completely t…
