The structure of religion and spirituality in a diverse sample of adults in the United States
Objective: This paper details psychometric analyses of religion and spirituality (R/S) measures in a diverse sample of U.S. adults in the Study on Stress, Spirituality, and Health (SSSH). Methods: participants. Given our goal of identifying a robust, parsimonious set of R/S measures for common use in U.S. cohort studies, we analyzed the structure of individual R/S items in a combined sample and disregarded whether items were part of a pre-existin…
Religious Coping, Stress, and Mental and Physical Health
This study examined the association between perceived stress and mental/physical health (SF-12) and the moderating role of positive and negative religious coping using data ( n = 5,059) from three cohorts (the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos ( n = 585), Nurses’ Health Study II ( n = 3,882), and The Strong Heart Study ( n = 592)) which included Hispanic/Latino, non-Hispanic White, and American Indian individuals in the USA. Does Religious Service Attendance Modify the Relationship between Everyday Discrimination and Risk of Obesity? Results from the Study on Stress, Spirituality and Health
Quitting smoking after a cancer diagnosis is associated with reductions in stigma and anxiety

Using data from an RCT of tobacco treatment, we conducted a secondary data analysis and hypothesized that 1) cancer patients who quit smoking would report greater reductions in internalized cancer stigma, compared to patients who did not quit and that 2) greater reductions in stigma …

The Study on Stress, Spirituality, and Health (SSSH)
This paper describes the development and initial psychometric testing of the baseline Spirituality Survey (SS-1) from the Study on Stress, Spirituality, and Health (SSSH). The SS-1 contains a mixture of items selected from validated existing scales and new items generated to measure important constructs not captured by existing instruments, and our purpose here was to establish the validity of new and existing measures in a racially/ethnically di…
Risk of Covid-19 among front-line health-care workers and the general community
BACKGROUND: Data for front-line health-care workers and risk of COVID-19 are limited. We sought to assess risk of COVID-19 among front-line health-care workers compared with the general community and the effect of personal protective equipment (PPE) on risk. METHODS: We did a prospective, observational cohort study in the UK and the USA of the general community, including front-line health-care workers, using self-reported data from the COVID Sym…
