New excavations at Tel Erani
Fortification walls and other buildings discovered during renewed excavations at Tel Erani (Tell esh-Sheikh el-Areyni) shed new light on the beginnings of urbanisation in the Southern Levant during the second half of the fourth millennium BC
Intermediate Bronze Age Crescent-Headed Figures in the Negev Highlands
This paper presents the discovery of a unique and widespread type of petroglyphs in the Western Negev Highlands, depicting human figures with crescent-shaped headgear, knee-high garments, and crescent pommel daggers. It proposes a methodology for dating this style and its historical context by: (1) analysis of presence or absence of specific animal species in the engraved scenes; (2) examination of the occurrence of particular attributes that app…
The Chariots Engraving of Timnaʿ (Israel) Revisited
This article offers a new interpretation of the so-called Chariots Engraving discovered in the Timnaʿ Valley of Israel by Beno Rothenberg in 1960. Challenging previous interpretations, it suggests that the engraving was made in a single time frame and does not represent a multi-phased construction project. By means of a detailed analysis, this article further proposes that the engraving portrays hunting activities performed by Egyptian military u…
Early Bronze Age Goods Exchange in The Southern Levant
The Har Hemar Site
Archaeological fieldwork in the southern Judean Desert has traced an Early Bronze Age ascent and a control site—Har Hemar—situated next to it. The ceramic finds included quantities of northern wares such as North Canaanite Metallic Ware (NCMW) and Khirbet Kerak Ware (KKW). The paper describes the ascent and the site of Har Hemar, and suggests dating their operation to 2800–2700 ± 50 BCE. It proposes that the NCMW represents remains of trade items…

Is Somebody Watching You? Ancient Surveillance Systems in the Southern Judean Desert
The Panoptic model of surveillance, which enables a small number of observers to control large numbers of people, is usually considered a modern (18th century AD) invention and a conceptual cornerstone of modern surveillance and disciplinary systems. On the basis of two case studies encountered in a survey near the southwestern edge of the Dead Sea, this study suggests that the concept of surveillance is much older. The first case deals with a qu…
ʿEn Yahav
The paper describes the first field season at a small copper-smelting site in the central ʿArava, which had operated in the Early Bronze Age IV (EB IV) and most probably in the Roman period as well. The fieldwork focused on three main projects: a surface survey, a multipurpose sampling, and an excavation of a small probe. An additional goal set for this season was the formulation of a methodological procedure of bringing the lab into the field-na…
Egyptian-Canaanite Interaction at Nahal Tillah, Israel (ca. 4500-3000 B. C. E.)
The nature of the Dynasty 0-Dynasty I Egyptian presence in southern Israel has been a source of debate since the excavations of Tel Erani on the fringe of the northern Negev in the 1950s when numerous Egyptian artifacts were discovered. Since then, a wide range of models have been used to characterize the nature of Egyptian-Canaanite relations. These models include warfare/conquest, commercialization, distance parity, and world systems. The recen…
