  • Grand Theory in the Sociological Canon. Scopes, Semantics, and Strategic Usages of a Rhetorical Device Since the 1960s

Open Access•Lars Döpking, Sébastien Parker et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2026

Since the 1960s, “grand theory” has increasingly been used to categorize and discuss sociological theories. The result of this is, ironically, a discourse in which it is neither clear which theories count as “grand” nor what such a characterization indicates. By rooting our analysis in a corpus of 3,673 chapters of English-language textbooks, we offer an empirically-grounded contribution to the debate on the past and future of “grand theory”. Fir…

  • From Static Canon to Dynamic Toolkit: A Scaffolded Approach to Teaching Classical Theory

    Open Access•Coco Guzman•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2026•References: 18

Classical sociological theory courses often present pedagogical challenges due to a “relevance gap,” where students perceive theoretical material as abstract and disconnected from their lived experiences. The article addresses such challenges by reframing theory not as a static canon but as a dynamic toolkit for cultivating transferable skills. Drawing on literature in active learning, dialogic pedagogy, and canon diversification and supported by…

  • Toward a Historical Sociology of Canonization: Comparing the Development of Sociological Theory in the English-, German-, and French-Language Contexts since the 1950s

Open Access•Coco Guzman, Daniel Silver et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Sociology•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 88

This paper adds to a vital international tradition of discussing the history of sociological theory by empirically investigating its structure, dynamics, and relationships. Our primary contribution to this tradition is to bring to the conversation a greater level of comparative and historical scope, a more systematic quantitative methodology, and a degree of reflexivity and synthesis. To do so, we examine some 670 editions of sociological-theory …

  • The Institution of Sociological Theory in Canada

Open Access•Coco Guzman, Cinthya Guzman et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•2018•Cited by: 11•References: 24

Using theory syllabi and departmental data collected for three academic years, this paper investigates the institutional practice of theory in sociology departments across Canada. In particular, it examines the position of theory within the sociological curriculum, and how this varies among universities. Taken together, our analyses indicate that theory remains deeply institutionalized at the core of sociological education and Canadian sociologis…

  • Los Fantasmas: Dibujo e invocación de lo existible en la España post-franquista

    Open Access•Coco Guzman•ARTICLE•Nuevo mundo mundos nuevos•2018•References: 4

  • We Exist: Combating Erasure Through Creative Analytic Comix about Bisexuality

    Open Access•Lisbeth A Berbary, Coco Guzman•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 35

As the voices of lesbian, gay, and transgender (LGT) individuals gain inclusion in academic spheres, bisexual experiences continue to be silenced and excluded from the discussion. In particular, systems of biphobia, monosexism, and erasure often coordinate to limit bisexual visibility and activism. This bisexual erasure translates into negative social experiences for bisexual individuals who must face a constant struggle to find belonging and acc…
