Populist pragmatism: The nationalisation of local government strategies by the Rassemblement National
Existing studies have explored the territorialisation of the Rassemblement National (RN) in terms of its regional variation in patterns of support and mobilisation strategies. The extent of regional variation in its local government strategies, however, has been neglected. In this article, we make this enquiry through comparison of two municipalities run by the RN between 2014 and 2020. While similar in local demand and central party supply, the …
Confronting Islamophobia and its consequences in East London in a context of increased surveillance and stigmatisation
Islamophobia is an issue faced by Muslims across Europe. In the UK, there is a growing acceptance that the government’s counter-terrorism policy, Prevent, has led to increased discrimination. Current research is split on whether discrimination among Muslims is leading to disengagement and a retreat from public life or whether this has inspired a feeling of responsibility to participate more actively and engage in politics or alternative forms of …
Rethinking refuge in the time of Covid-19
COVID-19 has profoundly impeded the global movement of people. Two key questions, however, remain unclear. Firstly, what are the possible medium and long-term implications of recent developments and, secondly, do they mark a departure from the existing approaches in state practices toward displaced migration? Using examples limited to Europe, we argue that the first question cannot yet be fully answered but a better understanding can be achieved …
Window Dressing? The Mainstreaming Strategy of the Rassemblement National in Power in French Local Government
Populist radical right (PRR) parties have increasingly occupied positions of power in recent years, inspiring much scholarly interest in the mainstreaming consequences of government responsibility. This article analyses the extent and manner of mainstreaming of the Rassemblement National (RN) while in power at the local level of government in France. A municipal-level focus enables the novel inclusion of the party into the debate about the conseq…
The role of asylum in processes of urban gentrification
This article analyses the relationship between the accommodation of Dispersed asylum seekers and urban gentrification in the UK. We argue that alongside other racialised and classed minorities, asylum seekers are vulnerable to spatial strategies associated with gentrification such as neighbourhood 'dumping', containment and 'territorial stigmatisation', the highly coercive quality of the UK government's Dispersal Scheme means that any relationshi…
Ethnic minorities in British politics: Candidate selection and clan politics in the Labour Party
In increasingly diverse polities, the question of how minorities engage with national and local political processes is important. In the U.K., the Labour Party has traditionally benefited electorally from ethnic minority communities, often through ethnicity-based voting blocs. However, little attention has been paid to how the Party’s candidate selection process is influenced by strategic party membership and nomination. We argue that community c…

European Social Movements and Muslim Activism: Another World but with Whom?

Biraderi, Bloc Votes and Bradford: Investigating the Respect Party's Campaign Strategy
Research Highlights and Abstract This article Contributes to theoretical debates on minority political participation in the UK, with specific reference to inter-generational variations within the South Asian Muslim community; Contributes to the scholarly literature on the impact and effectiveness of new political parties within the British political system, through a case study of the Respect Party; Adds to empirical primary data on strategies ad…

All I'm Asking, Is For a Little Respect: Assessing the Performance of Britain's Most Successful Radical Left Party
This article offers an overview of the genesis, development and decline of the Respect Party, a rare example of a radical left party which has achieved some degree of success in the UK. It analyses the party's electoral fortunes and the reasons for its inability to expand on its early breakthroughs in East London and Birmingham. Respect received much of its support from Muslim voters, although the mere presence of Muslims in a given area was not …
Un antisémitisme nouveau? The debate about a ‘new antisemitism’ in France
Nowhere has the debate about a ‘new antisemitism’ been as fierce and relevant as in France. In recent years this country has witnessed high recorded levels of antisemitism, prompting many commentators to claim the existence of ananti-sémitisme nouveau. Something has indeed changed, at least in terms of the nature, frequency and perpetrators of antisemitic violence in France. Previously connected exclusively to the extreme right, it has now also b…
