  • The New Science of the Enchanted Universe

    Open Access•Juan Manuel Del Nido•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•2024

I n the final years of his life, before his death in April 2021, Marshall Sahlins remained unsatisfied with the state of the discipline of anthropology. To address this situation, he set out to write a three-part magnum opus.As he explains in the preface to The New Science of the Enchanted Universe, this volume was to be the first in the series, setting out the ontological stakes: most of the planet, he argues, still lives in an immanent "regime" …

  • Democracy, Ethics, and Neoliberalism in Latin America

    Open Access•Juan Manuel Del Nido•ARTICLE•Democratic Theory•2022•References: 11

Wendy Brown’s (2015) warning that neoliberalism is a threat to democracy has for decades had a particularly literal resonance in Latin America. Neoliberalism here has become a byword for government-endorsed dispossession, extractivism, and environmental destruction (Hetherington 2020; Riofrancos 2020); the dismantling of the state (Shever 2012); and the physical violence and economic decimation of dictatorial rule (Han 2012; Whyte 2019: 156–197; …

  • Uber mobilities, algorithms, and consumption

    Open Access•Juan Manuel Del Nido•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Based on an ethnography of Uber’s arrival in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this article uses a political economy approach to think politically about ethical reflections concerned with what good mobilities are, how they should be governed and what kinds of relations they entail. I found that particular understandings of what algorithms were and did, and how, however spurious, superficial or derivative, triangulated the differential salience and (re)pro…

  • Taxis vs. Uber

Juan Manuel Del Nido•BOOK•Taxis vs. Uber•2021

Uber's April 2016 launch in Buenos Aires plunged the Argentine capital into a frenzied hysteria that engulfed courts of law, taxi drivers, bureaucrats, the press, the general public, and Argentina's president himself. Economist and anthropologist Juan M. del Nido, who had arrived in the city six months earlier to research the taxi industry, suddenly found himself documenting the unprecedented upheaval in real time. Taxis vs. Uber examines the ens…

Its main purpose is the study of human societies in their cultural dimension. In honor of Wilhelm Schmidt‘s legacy, the cultivation of anthropology, ethnology, linguistics, and religious studies remain an essential component oft he Anthropos Institute – the organizational carrier…

  • Production, consumers' convenience, and cynical economies

    Open Access•Juan Manuel Del Nido•ARTICLE•Economic Anthropology•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Based on twelve months of fieldwork into Uber's conflict in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this article examines convenience's role in the emergence of what I call cynical economies: a method and logic of production expressly organized on the awareness of a distance the very rhetoric of convenience exacerbates. For the city's middle class, convenience defined a democratizing, empowering arena of private relations away from the hierarchies and exclusion…

  • Inscription

    Open Access•Juan Manuel Del Nido•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Work Review•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 16

By indexing several key variables in the industry to the "ficha," the taxi fare multiplier, Buenos Aires' taxi union recreated economic, fiscal, and legal relations emerging from taxi work. In principle a perfect example of a market device, an actant facilitating economic exchange, the ficha consistently transformed the taxi industry's income uncertainties into certainties for the union, abstracting its income from wages, contracts, and the amoun…
