  • Using Geographic Disaggregation to Compare Tuberculosis Epidemiology Among American Indian and Alaska Native Persons—USA, 2010–2020

Open Access•Yuri P Springer, J Steve Kammerer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2025

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) populations are frequently associated with the highest rates of tuberculosis (TB) disease of any racial/ethnic group in the USA. We systematically investigated variation in patterns and potential drivers of TB epidemiology among geographically distinct AIAN subgroups. METHODS: Using data reported to the National Tuberculosis Surveillance System during 2010-2020, we applied a geographic method o…

  • Tuberculosis Outbreaks in State Prisons, United States, 2011–2019

Rebekah J Stewart, Kala M Raz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•References: 18

Objectives. To understand the frequency, magnitude, geography, and characteristics of tuberculosis outbreaks in US state prisons. Methods. Using data from the National Tuberculosis Surveillance System, we identified all cases of tuberculosis during 2011 to 2019 that were reported as occurring among individuals incarcerated in a state prison at the time of diagnosis. We used whole-genome sequencing to define 3 or more cases within 2 single nucleot…

  • Tuberculosis in Indigenous Persons — United States, 2009–2019

  • Unexpected decline in tuberculosis cases coincident with economic recession - United States, 2009

    Open Access•Carole A Winston, Carla A Winston et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Our assessments show that the decline in reported TB was not an artifact of changes in surveillance methods; rather, similar declines were found through multiple data sources. While the steady decline of TB cases before 2009 suggests ongoing improvement in TB control, we were not able to identify any substantial change in TB control activities or TB transmission that would account for the abrupt decline in 2009. It is possible that other multiple…

  • Trends in Tuberculosis Reported From the Appalachian Region

Open Access•Ryan M Wallace, Lori R Armstrong et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2008

Context: Appalachia has been characterized by its poverty, a factor associated with tuberculosis, yet little is known about the disease in this region. Purpose: To determine whether Appalachian tuberculosis risk factors, trends, and rates differ from the rest of the United States. Methods: Analysis of tuberculosis cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Tuberculosis Surveillance System (NTSS) within the 50 stat…
